History of Ferris Wheel in the World
The Chicago Wheel is sometimes referred to as the original ‘ferris wheel’ (or world’s first ferris wheel). It opened on 21st June 1983, featuring a height of 80,4 meters. Because it’s designed and built by Georgre Washington Gale Ferris Jr. (1859-1896, an American civil engineer), so it’s called ‘ferris wheel’ after that.
Purpose of constructing the Chicago Wheel (in the World’s Columbian Exposition) was to surpass the Eiffel Tower in the Paris International Exposition in 1889. Planners at the event in Chicago wanted to have a building that was ‘original, unique, and daring’. Ferris proposed a wheel on which visitors could see the whole exhibition, but because of safety reasons, the planners didn’t approve yet.
Later, some local investors decided to cover the construction cost (nearly 400,000 USD at that time), so the Ferris’ project was agreed. Additionally, the planners hoped that the admission to this wheel could make the event out of debt or even profitable. Finally, the Chicago Wheel was built. It has 36 cars, and each car was able to carry 60 people. Until it’s demolished in 1906, it served 2.5 millions of passengers. In 1985, it’s dismantled and rebuilt in Lincoln Park, Chicago city, and later, again dismantled and rebuilt in 1904 World’s Fair in Missouri, USA.
History of Sun Wheel in Da Nang Vietnam
The Sun Wheel in Da Nang’s Asia Park originally is the ‘Igosu 108’, the tallest observation wheel in the world from 1992 to 1997. The ‘Igosu 108’ was a giant ferris wheel within an amusement park on the shores of Biwa Lake of Shiga in Japan. It’s completed and opened on 26th April 1992, and after that, attracted an estimated 50,000 visitors a day. This 108-meters-wheel defeated the ‘Cosmo Clock 21’ in Yokohama city (Japan) which rises up to 107,5 meters and kept the world record from 1989. On 12nd July 1997, ‘Tempozan Ferris Wheel’, a 112-meters-tall wheel in Osaka city (Japan), replaced its highest position on the world ranking. Later, another Japanese wheel and the London Eye in turn became the tallest observation wheel on the planet. At the present, 250-meters-tall ‘Ain Bubai’ has no competitors.
On 31st August 2001, the ‘Igosu 108’ was shut down due to poor business performance. In September 2013, demolition works here started, and then finished in December in the same year.
In October 2013, the ‘Igosu 108’ was installed inside the brand-new amusement park of Da Nang city, central Vietnam. Its new name is ‘Sun Wheel’ because it’s owned and managed by the Sun Group, one of the largest real estate developers in Vietnam. It’s currently owner of Ba Na Hills where the world-famous Golden Hands Bridge and world’s longest cable cars are located.
On 18th July 2014, the Sun Wheel was opened to visitors, and after that, this event was voted to be one of top 10 events of the year in Da Nang. It’s the first accessible building in Asia Park. In 2024, the Asia Park was renamed ‘Da Nang Downtown’.
Experience on the Ride of Sun Wheel (Da Nang Ferris Wheel)
