What is the Exact Phuoc My Beach Located?
Phuoc My Beach is the beach on the right side of the widest stretch of Vo Nguyen Giap Street (between Vo Van Kiet roundabout and Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc crossroad). The most central spot on this beach is by the East Sea Park (Bien Dong Park) which lies at the crossroad of Pham Van Dong Street and Vo Nguyen Giap Street.
There is no clear boundary between Phuoc My Beach and My Khe Beach in its south direction. At the moment, there is a sign of ‘Da Nang Beach’ at My Khe Beach’s square. So, it’s easy to recognize them exactly right now.
Name of Phuoc My Beach in Da Nang
Phuoc My is a ward or an area in Son Tra district. Its name is combined with the first word in the name of Phuoc Tuong village and the first word in the name of My Khe village. It means ‘blessing and beautiful’. A beach right to the south of Phuoc My Beach is named after My Khe village.
On the other side, Phuoc My Beach is also popularly known as ‘Pham Van Dong Beach’ by locals. In 2000, Han River Bridge and Pham Van Dong Road running from it to this beach were constructed. After that, people used the road’s name to call it. In 2017, the city confirmed its official name as Phuoc My Beach to honor the fishing village where it’s located. By the way, Pham Van Dong (man, 1906-2000) is a Vietnamese politician who served as the Prime Minister of North Vietnam from 1955 to 1976, and then of unified Vietnam from 1976 to 1987. He was the longest serving prime minister in Vietnam until now.
During the Vietnam War (1960s-1970s), Phuoc My Beach is part of the longer beach that was called ‘China Beach’ because it lies on the shore of ‘South China Sea’, the English name for Vietnamese East Sea/Bien Dong. From 1988 to 1991, ‘China Beach’ was the title for an American drama television series, with the principal character as a nurse who worked in a hospital near the beach in the war. Today, this name is prohibited for use inside Vietnam because the beach doesn’t belong to China.
Things to See & Do in Phuoc My Beach Da Nang
Between the East Sea Park and the ocean, there is Phuoc My Beach (official), or Pham Van Dong Beach (unofficial). It’s a 600-meters-long stretch of white fine sand, with crystal-clear seawater on one side and tall, shady coconut palms on the other side. Visitors can walk on this beach for miles because it’s connected with other beaches on the same coastline, such as the much more famed My Khe Beach to the south.
At Phuoc My Beach which has a width of 50-70 meters, visitors can find lots of spaces to relax under coconut trees, enjoy such cool breezes, sunbeathe, get tanned, or play with kids. The atmosphere here is more peaceful than the neighbouring My Khe Beach, due to being less well-known. In the front, the seawater is not deep, unpolluted, no trash, and the waves are not high and strong. That’s perfect to go swimming, especially for little visitors. Water sports, such as jet skiing, parasailing, parachuting,…are easier to see and participate in at My Khe Beach (that is not too far away from Phuoc My Beach).
To the south of Phuoc My Beach, there are some restaurants to go for food. On their menu, it’s possible to see Vietnamese, fusion, and western cuisines as well as seafood dishes. Tables with a view to the blue ocean, the Monkey Mountain and a huge white lady buddha statue, are many to choose from. At night, the atmosphere is calm and romantic.
How to Get to Phuoc My Beach in Da Nang
The East Sea Park is on Vo Nguyen Giap St, Phuoc My ward, Son Tra district, Da Nang. It’s exactly at the crossroad of Vo Nguyen Giap St and Pham Van Dong St.
To get to the East Sea Park from Da Nang, visitors can walk or take a taxi/car/minivan/bus, ride the bicycle or motorcycle, or use a public bus.
If stay overnight in hotels within the My Khe Beach area, just walk or get a taxi. From hotels near the river or downtown Da Nang, taking a taxi/car is better. The distance is around 2-3 kilometers (so the price is less than 150,000 VND).
If ride the bicycle or motorcycle, visitors can park in the park, and the fee is 5,000-10,000 VND/time/bike.
From Hoi An, the best route to the East Sea Park in Da Nang, is the coastal road. The distance is 30 kilometers, so the drive is 40-60 mins, depending on the traffic. On the way, visitors can sightsee the Marble Mountains, Am Phu Cave, Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village, Non Nuoc Beach.
