Things to Do in Nam O Beach, Da Nang Vietnam

Nam O Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Da Nang Vietnam. It has a 750-meters-long stretch of soft sand with the ocean in the front and fishing villages in the back. Here, visitors will enjoy seeing a mesmerizing natural scenery with white sand, blue waters, green vegetations, blue sky, and the view to the city and nearby mountains. To the left, that are Nam O Point (a small rocky cape topped by a dense forest that is forbidden), Hai Van Pass range (a long mountain range with peaks crowned by white clouds, the highest point is above 1,000 meters) and Son Cha Island (a small conical shaped island at the entrance of the bay). To the right, there are tall buildings, Tien Sa Port (the largest port in central Vietnam) and Son Tra Mountain (also known as the Monkey Mountain) which rises up to 700 meters. On the beach, there are many basket boats (round bamboo boats) and fishing boats with a mango seed shape (to adapt to strong waves in the area).

The most famous spot on Nam O Beach is the ‘Algae Beach’ where stones in different sizes and shapes, are covered by green algae in March and April each year. Lots of locals and photographers go to this place to take pictures. To get there, find the quickest way to this point on Google maps (Mieu ba Lieu Hanh, 16°07’03.7″N 108°07’50.1″E) and then follow a nearby small walking path. It’s free to enter, but parking requires a small amount of money.

On the other hand, Xuan Thieu Beach is also safe for swimming. In the dry months, many local people come here to go swimming and do exercise. For that reason, visitors can follow. Our advice is that visitors just swim in places where locals swim.

Right on Nam O Beach, visitors have the chance to see many historical sites: Mieu Ba Lieu Hanh (worship Huyen Tran Princess who married king of Champa in 1306), Dinh Co Hon (Temple for Lonely Spirits), Lang Ong Ngu (the Whale Temple), ancient Champa wells, tombs of ancestors for local clans, Buddhist temples, old cemeteries,… All of these places are honored to be an important cultural heritage site of Da Nang city in 2020. In the back of Nam O Beach, it’s Nam O Fish Sauce Village in which local families have made fish sauce for over 400 years. When the waves are biggest in the year, surfers come to Nam O Beach to go surfing.

Near Nam O Beach, along Nguyen Tat Thanh Road, there are some local seafood restaurants to go. Compared to other beachside areas in Da Nang, the price here is cheaper.
