Better to Know about Love Padlock Tradition

The first love lock bridge in the world is the Most Ljubavi (English: Bridge of Love) in Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia in Europe. History of love padlocks here dates back to at least 100 years (around World War I). Accordingly, in the town, there was a schoolmistress Nada falling in love with a Serbian officer Relja. After they committed to each other, the man had to go to the war in Greece and then he fell in love with a woman coming from Corfu in the same country. For that reason, Nada and Relja broke their engagement, and then Nada passed away. Later, young girls in her town started writing their names with their boyfriend’s names on padlocks. These locks would be bound to the railings of the bridge where Nada and her lover used to meet, to protect their own loves. This action has become more popular since it’s mentioned in the poem of a female Serbian writer and poet.

What to Expect in Love Lock Bridge of Da Nang?

Da Nang is linked with a beautiful love story, so that is one of reasons to explain why the city decides to build a love bridge. In the story, fairy girls from heaven descend to Da Nang to enjoy its wonderful natural beauty and go swimming in the sea. Everyday, they remove their wings in the morning, and wear them again in the afternoon to go back to heaven. A local boy knows them by mistake and loves one of the girls. One day, he hides her wings to not let her return home and have to live on the Earth with him forever. This story is the theme for the first year of Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (in 2008).

The Love Bridge of Da Nang is 68 meters long, featuring black handrails and ‘love trees’ with many red love-shaped lanterns which become so romantic by night. On the bridge, there are many spacious areas for groups to take photos and house crowds when visitors come to watch the fire and water show at the Dragon Bridge (one of the best spots to see it) or enjoy the waterfronts. When walking to the end, visitors have to return by the same way. Before sunset, the view from this bridge is also awesome, including the Dragon Bridge (one of 16 world’s most unique bridges), the Han River Bridge (one of Vietnam’s last rotating bridges), the park along Bach Dang Street on the other side, and other landmarks.

Visitors can bring their own lock or buy it at nearby shops (price there starts at 50,000 VND) to attach it at Da Nang’s Love Lock Bridge. However, if buying at shops, people there are happy to give a correction pen (or any possible pen) to write names of two people on the lock. In the bridge, couples can choose anywhere to lock and then throw the key into the river (to express that the love is unbreakable).

To know the shortest/quickest way, just use Google maps or head towards the Dragon Bridge. From Hai Chau district, let’s go to Nguyen Van Linh street, across the Dragon Bridge and then go to Tran Hung Dao street. From My Khe Beach area, let’s follow Vo Van Kiet street until its end (the riverside or Tran Hung Dao street).
