Why Are There Three Linh Ung Pagoda in Da Nang?
Many visitors wonder that why are there three Linh Ung Pagoda at Da Nang? Let follow our stories to find out reasons.
Back to the history, the first Linh Ung Pagoda was constructed in 1826 by request of Minh Mang king. After 1975, Buddhist monk Thich Thien Nguyen who suggested to construct other Linh Ung Pagoda, stayed here. Many buildings were restored and added by him. He also played his role as the leader of Da Nang city’s Buddhist associations.
In 1999, he and president of Da Nang’s people committee Nguyen Ba Thanh, suggested building another Linh Ung Pagoda in Ba Na Hills. This is a step to attract more tourists coming to the hills. A giant 27-meters-tall Shakyamuni Buddha was built here also.
In 2004, he and president of Da Nang’s people committee Nguyen Ba Thanh, again suggested building another Linh Ung Pagoda in Son Tra Peninsula (Monkey Mountain). This is also one of efforts to draw tourists to the peninsula and the city. A giant 67-meters-tall Lady Buddha was built here.
On the map, three Linh Ung Pagoda are located in different sides of Da Nang city. Linh Ung Pagoda of Marble Mountain is in the south, Linh Ung Pagoda of Ba Na Hills is in the west and the last one, Linh Ung Pagoda of Son Tra Peninsula is in the east. After 2010, a ‘Buddhist triangle’ was created with points as three Linh Ung Pagoda and Da Nang city center as the central point (please see the map below). Citizens believe that their city and themselves are protected by Buddha. When the typhoons come (potentially from October to December every year), they will be safe or not damaged heavily.
In inclusions, construction of three Linh Ung Pagoda aims to protect Da Nang citizens from natural disasters (especially typhoons) in the spirituality and to grow local tourism industry.
