How to Visit Ky Anh Tunnels in Tam Ky
Located in rural villages of Tam Thang commune in Tam Ky city, Ky Anh Tunnels was constructed by local people and solders from 1965 to 1967 (in the Vietnam War). Total length of its tunnels is up to 32 kilometers, making it the 3rd largest war tunnel system in Vietnam (after Cu Chi Tunnels in present-day Ho Chi Minh city and Vinh Moc Tunnels in Quang Tri province). In January 1965, the first tunnel was built here under the leadership of Nguyen Ba and Tran Minh Tuan, and it’s just 25 meters long. After May 1965, local people dug more tunnels. About the size, tunnels of Ky Anh Tunnels are 1,2 to 1,5 meters tall and 08 to 1 meters wide. In 1997, this place was recognized to be Vietnam’s national heritage site. Above all, Thach Tan village has most tunnels in the area.
Compared to other war tunnels in Vietnam, Ky Anh Tunnels is not touristy.
The first highlight in Ky Anh Tunnels is Thach Tan Communal House. It’s constructed in late 18th century to worship the ancestors and their successful successors of Vietnamese clans in the village. About the architecture, this communal house has a triple gate, a front screen and a worshipping hall with three compartments (brick walls, wooden structures and tiled roofs). Today, a small house showing local life, tools used to dig tunnels and tunnel maps is added here (before the entrance gate, on the left hand side). On the 10th day of the third lunar month annually, members of all clans gather here to commemorate Hung kings and their own ancestors.
In the French colonial period, Thach Tan Communal House served as a place to store food, medicine and weapons. During the Vietnam War, this was the meeting place for Vietnamese communists. Below it, there is a hidden tunnel for first aid and food storage. Nearby, visitors will see a tunnel with a meeting room. It’s connected with other tunnels in the village. Spots where people see the hole to enter these tunnels, are only known by local people (may be a well, a stack of straw, a tree,…).
To visit Ky Anh Tunnels, it’s needed to go to Thach Tan Communal House first.
Not far away from the tunnels and the communal house, there is a big Garcinia celebica tree (Vietnamese: Cay roi mat). It’s over 500 years old. This tree was honored to be Vietnam’s heritage tree.
Thach Tan Village where Ky Anh Tunnels is located, has a long-standing tradition of sedge mat weaving. Visitors can see a local family here and learn about how to make a mat by traditional ways from family members. If stay in Hoi An, you also can go to Cam Kim Island to have this experience.
