Better to Know about Hoa Nghiem Cave in Marble Mountains

Near entrance of Huyen Khong Cave, the biggest cave in Marble Mountains, name of Hoa Nghiem Cave is inspired by the largest and most important sutra of Buddhism: the Flower Adornment Sutra (full name: Mahāvaipulya Buddhāvataṃsaka Sūtra). Flower Adornment (華嚴) means “adorned with flowers”. In Buddhism, “flowers” here are not ordinary flowers, but “flowers of merit” – that is, the deeds, practices and enlightenment of Bodhisattvas and Buddhas.

In the center of Hoa Nghiem Cave, there is a statue of Lady Buddha (Goddess of Mercy) built by cement, and an altar in the front. In Vietnam, her name “Quan Thế Âm” literally means “the one who hears the sounds (cries) of the world”. She symbolizes the ability to perceive and respond to the suffering of all sentient beings. In Vietnamese culture, she is seen as a motherly figure, always ready to soothe and help those in distress. Believers turn to her for help in overcoming all kinds of hardships—from natural disasters and illness to personal struggles and sorrow.

On the rock wall to the left of the Lady Buddha, there is a stele carved in 1640 named ‘Pho Da Linh Trung Phat’ (literally ‘Buddha in the Cave of Pho Da Mountain/Putuo Mountain’). Putuo Mountain is known as one of 4 holiest places for Buddhists in China, symbolically associated with Bodhisattva Guanyin (Avalokiteśvara). This stele has 23 sentences with Chinese and Sino-Nom characters, providing the information about merits of Chinese and Japanese merchants in Hoi An, who donated money to temples in the mountain. Today, it’s one of 78 inscriptions that were officially recognized as a Documentary Heritage under the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme for the Asia-Pacific Region in November 2022.

The passage to the next cave, Huyen Khong Cave, is to the left of the Lady Buddha.

Hoa Nghiem Cave and Huyen Khong Cave are often thought as a same cave.

Best Time to Visit Marble Mountains

If traveling to Da Nang and Hoi An in the dry season, from February to September, the best times to visit Marble Mountains are early morning (before 9 AM) and late afternoon (after 3 PM). In the midday, the temperature usually is high and it’s humid. The hottest hours are between 11 AM and 2 PM. Visitors should not come in this period, to protect the skin and not to be too sweaty or tired (especially if going with kids and elders). The photos will not be perfect anymore.

Between October and January, correspondingly the wet season, the best times to see Marble Mountains are when the rain stops or even when it’s sunny. Visitors need to check the weather forecast before going to the mountain (Googles can tell you the average temperature and change of rain in every hour of the day). Without rain, steps on the hiking trails and floor of the caves will be less wet, slippery and dangerous (but the cave floor is still dirty!).

In the high tourist seasons, around the end of April to August (mostly local tourists) and around November to February (mostly foreign tourists), there’re many group tours. A long queue at the elevator or crowds around the temple or parkings filled by big buses is commonly seen. Should go earlier than 9 AM and later than 4 PM if you don’t want to see too many people.
