History of Da Nang Museum

The Da Nang Museum was established in 1989 and then opened to the public on 26th April 2011 (to commemorate the 36th Vietnam’s Reunification day). Before 2025, it’s built within Dien Hai Citadel, the most important historical site in Da Nang city center. It’s built in the 19th century to protect the city from attacks from the sea. From 1858 to 1860, this place was associated with the first ever war between Vietnamese and French-Spanish armies (later French colonized the country). So, the event is a turning point in Vietnam’s history. See more information & details

Construction of the new Da Nang Museum started on 11st May 2020. It’s part of the preservation and restoration project of Dien Hai Citadel that was launched by Da Nang city. Previously, in 2017, this citadel was recognized as Vietnam’s special heritage site, the highest title for one historical site in the country. After the new museum is inaugurated, the old museum building will be destructed and then some buildings of the citadel will be restored (such as flag tower, bastions,…).

One of buildings in the new Da Nang Museum is the former City Hall of Da Nang that was built by French people from 1889 to 1900 (after the city became a protectorate of French people in 1888). In the August Revolution of Vietnam in 1945, Vietnamese revolutionists hung up the golden-starred red banner at the top of this hall, marking the end of French colonial regime in the city. From 1955 to 1975, once again, it became the seat of power for government of the Republic of South Vietnam (RVN) in Da Nang. On 29th March 1975, the flag of the RVN was replaced by the national flag of Vietnam. From 1975 to 2014, it played its role as the headquarter of the People’s committee and the People’s council of Da Nang city (2014 until now, the Administrative Center replaces it). Nowadays, the Former City Hall is one of interesting places on the waterfronts of the Han River.

On 29th March 2025, the new Da Nang Museum is opened, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Da Nang’s Liberation day and Vietnam’s Reunification day. It’s the biggest museum in the city.

How to Get to Da Nang Museum

The new Da Nang Museum is located at 31 Tran Phu Street or 42-44 Bach Dang Street, Thach Thang ward, Hai Chau district, Da Nang city, Vietnam. However, visitors will need to go to 31 Tran Phu Street to sightsee this museum.

If staying near the Han River Bridge or Han Market or Da Nang Cathedral, visitors can walk to the Da Nang Museum. We recommend going along the beautiful promenade of the Han River to see and photograph at the east side of the museum first. After that, go to the entrance on Tran Phu Street to begin the visit. See our recommended self guided waking tour in Da Nang

From places in Hai Chau, Thanh Khe and Cam Le districts, visitors can take a taxi or private car/van/bus, or ride the motorbike to go to Da Nang Museum. This place is near the Han River Bridge, therefore just find the shortest way to find the bridge (and then the museum).

From Son Tra and Ngu Hanh Son districts on the other side of the Han River, it’s needed to cross Han River Bridge/Dragon Bridge/Tran Thi Ly Bridge to see the riverside Bach Dang Road. After that, turn right and keep going northwards until seeing the museum on the left hand side. At the crossroad of Quang Trung Road, turn left and then turn left again to go to the main entrance of the museum (left hand side).

From Hoi An, the distance to the Da Nang Museum is some 30 kilometers. Visitors often get there by car/taxi/bus or riding the motorbike. It takes about 1 hour if going by car/bus. If want to ride the motorbike, the coastal road is the quickest way. From anywhere in Hoi An, go to the 4-way intersection in An Bang Beach (Hai Ba Trung Street and Lac Long Quan Street). After that, follow Lac Lac Long Street/Truong Sa Street/Vo Nguyen Giap Street towards the north until seeing the crossroad of Pham Van Dong Street in Da Nang (the East Sea Park). Turn left, keep going, cross the Han River Bridge and then turn right to go to riverside Bach Dang Street. Not far away, the Da Nang Museum lies on the left hand side, but to sightsee, it’s needed to come to the entrance at 31 Tran Phu Street. Parking lot for motorbike is underground and free of charge.
