History & Architecture of Bang An Tower
Bang An Tower is one of the last standing remains from Cham people in Hoi An area (Thu Bon River delta). It’s built between 875 and 977, in the reign of Bhadravarman II emperor. He used it to worship Shiva God (God of Destroying in Hinduism) and named it ‘Linga Paravesmara’. All of this information was carved on the stone stele found at the site.
Today, Bang An Tower still retains its octagonal architecture, making it the only survivor of the type all over Champa kingdom. It includes a main temple, rising up to 20 meters, and a hallway. Both of them look like a Linga, the symbol of Shiva God and his power. Like other Hindu temples, the whole tower faces to the east where the sun goes up and a new day begins. There is a hole in the top of the main temple, allowing natural sunlight to fall into the worshipping room. On the walls of Bang An Tower, visitors can not see any stone carvings or decorations or windows. Once again, this feature makes it different from other Cham towers.

Tips to Visit Bang An Tower
– Bang An Tower is between Hoi An and My Son Sanctuary, so visitors can stop to visit this place on the way from Hoi An to My Son and vice versa.
– In the dry season, don’t forget to bring sun cream, sun glasses, hat/cap or umbrella, and bottles of water for drinking once you go to Bang An Tower.
– In the wet season, don’t forget to bring a rain poncho/jacket, umbrella, sandals or waterproof shoes. Before going to the museum, please remove rain poncho/jacket or umbrella, to keep the floor dry.

How to Get to Bang An Tower
Bang An Tower is in Dien An ward, Dien Ban town, Quang Nam province. It’s 12 kilometers west of Hoi An city center.
From Hoi An, popular ways to go to Bang An Tower are getting a taxi/car/bus and riding the motorbike. No matter which one you choose, we recommend stopping here to visit, on the way to My Son Sanctuary (a much bigger complex of Cham towers, a Unesco world heritage site). For motorbike rides, the best route is the provincial road DT608. From anywhere in Hoi An, go to Hung Vuong Street and then follow it (westwards) towards Vinh Dien town. After cross Vinh Dien Bridge, follow Tran Quy Cap Street on the left and then go straight away until seeing Bang An Tower on the left hand side.
From Da Nang, the distance to Bang An Tower is some 30 kilometers. If go by car, the drive will be 45 to 60 minutes long. If riding the motorbike by your own, the quickest way to get to it is the Highway 1A (AH1). Just follow it towards Vinh Dien town. Before Vinh Dien Bridge, there is a road named Tran Quy Cap Street to the left. Go along it until seeing Phan Thanh Tai primary school. Bang An Tower lies on the left hand side.
