Better to Know about An Bang Cemetery
Located in sand dunes between the village and the coast, on a super long barrier island between Tam Giang Cau Hai lagoon system and the sea, An Bang Cemetery spans up to 40 hectares. This is home to thousands of small and big tombs where people from different generations of An Bang village are buried. Today, it becomes famous across Vietnam due to its richly decorated and expensive buildings. The biggest tombs boast a Hue local architecture with beautiful and colorful ceramic mosaics (that may be inspired by Khai Dinh Tomb, the mausoleum of the 12nd Nguyen king). The artisan has to cut or break ceramic pots, vases, plates, cups,… to have small pieces and then use hands to create amazing art works on tomb’s walls. Holy animals and plants with different meanings, are also used to make mosaics more lively.
An Bang Cemetery is known as ‘city of ghosts’. Additionally, it’s also not situated in Hoi An (the area around An Bang Beach).
In An Bang Cemetery, the cost of the biggest tombs can be up to some billion Vietnamese dong (just like a house). In Hue local culture, the life after death is same to the life on Earth right now. That’s why the people pay lots of money and efforts to build an enormous tomb for their family members. Constructing a good tomb is one of the ways to commemorate and ‘treat’ ancestors well. Furthermore, the most expensive tombs here belong to those who left the country after the Vietnam war and have lived in the United States.
Many travelers choose An Bang Cemetery (City of Ghosts) to stop on their way from Hue to Da Nang/Hoi An. Going by car and motorbike are popular. Near the cemetery, there is a beautiful beach to visit too. See other attractions between Hue and Hoi An
