History & Architecture of September 2 Monument in Da Nang
The September 2 Monument is one of landmarks in Da Nang city downtown, Vietnam. It lies on 2 Thang Chin Street (September 2 Street), one of major roads on the West bank of the Han River, and between March 29 Square (the central square of the city) and Da Nang Downtown Theme Park (formerly Asia Park, the largest amusement park in the city centre). Its official name is the Da Nang Martyrs Memorial Monument. However, local residents have called it by name of the street in its front.
September 2 is Vietnam’s independence day. On this day in 1945, at Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh president read the Declarations of Indepence of Vietnam.
The September 2 Monument of Da Nang was constructed in 1994, and designed by Vietnamese architect Pham Sy Chuc, famous sculptor Pham Van Hang and painter Do Toan.
In 2022, the September 2 Monument and nearby March 29 Square are renovated and enlarged. On 30th August, the inauguration ceremony of these places took place, to commemorate the 79th anniversary of Vietnam’s Independence day. Total cost was up to 212 billion Vietnamese dong. In addition, this monument was also decorated by colorful lights throughout the night (part of a project aiming to ‘light up the city’ to attract more visitors).
After the sunset, many locals and visitors gather at the square near the September 2 Monument to watch the performances of water fountains and fireworks from the Symphony of the River within the Da Nang Downtown Theme Park.
