Names of My Khe Beach in Da Nang
My Khe Beach is named after My Khe Village, a Vietnamese fishing village where it’s located. In Vietnamese, My Khe means ‘beautiful stream/river’ because there was one small stream/river running through the village in the past.
During the Vietnam War (1960s-1970s), My Khe Beach was called ‘China Beach’ because it’s on the shore of ‘South China Sea’, the English name for Vietnamese East Sea/Bien Dong. From 1988 to 1991, ‘China Beach’ was the title for an American drama television series, with the principal character as a nurse who worked in a hospital near the beach in the war. Today, this name is prohibited for use inside Vietnam because the beach doesn’t belong to China.
What is the Exact My Khe Beach Located?
Officially, ‘My Khe Beach’ is the name for 1000-meters-long stretch of sand along the eastern coastline of Da Nang, from the Whale Temple Park (Ca Ong Park) to the crossroad of Vo Nguyen Giap St and Nguyen Van Thoai St. To its north, there is Phuoc My Beach and the East Sea Park. To its south, there is My An Beach and the Sea Star Park.
However, in fact, there are no mountains or rocks or anything else on My Khe Beach to know its ends. So, visitors and lots of locals use ‘My Khe Beach’ to name the whole public and non-stop strip of sand, running from Bien Dong Park (the East Sea Park) in the north and Sao Bien Park (the Sea Star Park) in the south. Its total length is 2,8 km.
The best part of My Khe Beach is along the stretch of Vo Nguyen Giap Street from Vo Van Kiet Street to Phan Tu Street.
There is no clear boundary between My Khe Beach and My An Beach in its south direction. That’s why both locals and tourists think that these beaches are one. Except the name, everything is no different between them.
