Reasons Why You Should See My Son Temples in the Morning

In the morning, My Son Sanctuary opens from 6:00 AM.

Here are top reasons why you should see My Son Sanctuary in the morning:

Reason 1 – avoid the intense heat in the midday: Because the temple ruins are located in an enclosed valley that traps heat, arriving early (around 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM) ensures you can walk the jungle pathways comfortably before the intense midday sun hits.

Reason 2 – avoid the crowd and enjoy the most peaceful time of the day: Large tour buses from nearby Da Nang and Hoi An typically arrive between 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM. Visiting first thing in the morning allows you to explore the archaeological structures in complete tranquility and capture photos without a sea of tourists in the background.

Reason 3- magical morning light and mist: As the sun rises over the surrounding mountains, it casts a beautiful golden glow over the weathered red-brick temples. Coupled with the soft morning mist rising from the valley floor, the entire sanctuary takes on a deeply mystical, cinematic atmosphere that disappears later in the day.

Reason 4 – connect with the sacred atmosphere: My Son was once the holy religious capital of the ancient Champa Kingdom. The early morning stillness—broken only by the sounds of birds chirping and rustling leaves—makes it far easier to appreciate the spiritual and historical significance of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Reason 5- easier day planning: Starting your tour at sunrise means you will conclude your exploration by mid-morning. This leaves your entire afternoon free to return to Hoi An for a relaxing lunch, hit the beaches of Da Nang, or enjoy other activities without feeling rushed.

Reasons Why You Should See My Son Temples in the Afternoon

In the afternoon, My Son Sanctuary closes at 5:00 pm.

Here are top reasons why you should see My Son Sanctuary in the afternoon:

Reason 1 – avoid the morning crowds: By 2:00 PM, the massive wave of morning tour buses has completely departed for lunch. Arriving in the late afternoon often means you get entire temple clusters entirely to yourself, allowing you to explore the ruins in absolute peace.

Reason 2 – stunning golden hour and sunset views: As the sun begins to dip behind the Cat’s Tooth Mountain (Hon Quap) in the late afternoon, the light turns into a warm, rich gold. This “golden hour” beautifully accentuates the deep orange and red hues of the ancient Champa bricks, making it prime time for photography.

Reason 3 – cooler shadows and forest breezes: While the early afternoon (12:00 PM to 2:00 PM) is intensely hot, the temperature drops noticeably after 3:30 PM. The surrounding jungle starts throwing long, protective shadows over the valley, and a cooler breeze picks up, making the walking paths much more pleasant.

Visitors at My Son in the afternoon

Which Part of the Day is Better to See My Son Temples?

– Choose the morning if you visit My Son Sanctuary in the dry season (generally strecthing from March to September).

In the hottest months of the year (June, July and August), try to go to My Son Sanctuary earliest as possible. When this sanctuary opens at 6:00 am, you can depart from Hoi An at 5:00-5:15 am and from Da Nang city at 5:00 am (earlier if stay in the hotel in Son Tra ward, Hoa Khanh ward,…. or remote hotel like Intercontinental Danang).

In the afternoon at My Son Sanctuary, thunderstorm may happen, causing the rain. For the best experience, including photography, the morning is better.

Make sure that you book a private transportation or tour in advance, at least 1 day in advance (because local people start working at 7:00 am). Contact us by Whatsapp number +84968009827 for a last minute booking. Our driver can come to your hotel within 30 minutes.

– From October to January, the wettest time of the year, choose morning or afternoon as long as it doesn’t rain.

Meaning that when the weather forecast says it’s less rainy in the morning, let’s choose the morning and vice versa, when the afternoon is drier, let’s do it in the afternoon.

To keep this day flexible, you should plan to see My Son Sanctuary with Hoi An Old Town. If morning is better than afternoon, after sightseeing My Son, nothing is better to do than walking around the Old Town if you’re a first timer. If afternoon is better than morning, a walking tour in Hoi An Old Town helps you to spend a morning perfectly. It has beautiful historical streets and buildings like Tran Phu Street, Japanese Bridge, Chinese temples, ancient houses, museums, market,….

In Da Nang, you should plan to see My Son Sanctuary with Marble Mountains. If morning is better than afternoon, after sightseeing My Son, hiking to old temples and amazing caves is a great activity for the other half of the day. If afternoon is better than morning, you can watch surreal light beams in Huyen Khong Cave in the noon (won’t be missed if come to Marble Mountains in the afternoon).

– Choose afternoon if you visit My Son Sanctuary in the highest tourist periods like Christmas and New Year.

During this holiday time, there’re a lot of tourists, especially from Europe and Americas, come to My Son Sanctuary. Big tourist group and group tours will arrive this temple in the morning. In the early morning, it’s also crowded.

From Da Nang or Hoi An, the traffic in the morning will be high. If go by car/van/bus, you have to spend more time to get there, at least 30 minutes. Inside My Son Sanctuary, the queue for buggy transfer is also long (20-30 minutes), including both the way to temples and the way back. If return to the city later than expected, you may miss something (even a tour booked previously).

At the theater where you watch the culture show, if can not come 10-15 minutes in advance, there is no chair to sit down. If travel with senior, this is a problem.

– Choose morning if you have to go back to Hoi An for cloth fitting.

Many people come and stay overnight in Hoi An for tailoring purpose. The fitting time is often in the afternoon or early evening. For that reason, going to My Son Sanctuary in the morning is perfect for planning the trip. When start it in the early morning, after seeing the temples, you have time to take shower at the hotel before walking to the tailor and having lunch.

– Choose afternooon if you travel with kids.

Many kids do not like walking up early in the morning. Going to My Son Sanctuary in the afternoon allows them to sleep more in the morning, having a breakfast before hang out.

– Choose afternoon when you like to see the sunset on Thu Bon River from a boat.

You can not spend a full day in My Son Sanctuary (it’s half day only). Therefore, to see the sunset on the river on the way from My Son to Hoi An, it’s needed to visit it in the afternoon. If can choose the noon or sunset boat trip, we think the best choice is 100% sunset trip.

– Choose morning if you want to see lotus flowers at My Son Santuary from late May to August.

During this period of the year, lakes inside My Son Sanctuary are filled by lotus flowers and leaves. The best time to see and photograph them is the early morning, when the sun is not high yet.

– Choose aftenroon if you plan to see My Son Sanctuary when Hoi An Lantern Festival takes place.

On the 14th day of each lunar month in Hoi An, the Lantern Festival is held, drawing a lot of tourists. My Son Sanctuary is also another must see in the area, so of course, it gets crowded. Go in the afternoon to avoid the crowds!

– Choose afternoon if you want to save a bit money for the trip.

There are some group tours giving a discount for afternoon tour to My Son Sanctuary.

– Choose afternoon if you don’t like waking up in the early morning.

When just need to know how the temples at My Son look like, you do have to wake up early in the morning. Going in the afternoon will help you to avoid the crowds and have more spaces for taking photos.

– Choose morning if you plan to visit Ba Na Hills and Golden Bridge on the same day without tour.

Ba Na Hills is a massive theme park on the mountaintop that is connected with the base by cable cars. If go without tour, you absolutely need time to navigate. Meanwhile, visiting My Son Sanctuary is much easier. Going to this place before Ba Na Hills, helps you to get done one destination first on the day and feel less stressful when stay in the other destination.
