History & Architecture of Phap Lam Pagoda in Da Nang
Phap Lam Pagoda was built in 1934 by local Buddhists and monks. At that time, it’s named Da Nang Buddhist Association Pagoda because it serves as the headquarter of Da Nang’s Buddhist Association. In 1970, when two Buddhist associations in Vietnam were unified, its name was changed to Phap Lam Pagoda like today. On 11st March 2009, restoration work at this temple was done, and opened again to locals and tourists.
Located in Da Nang downtown, Phap Lam Pagoda is a two-storied temple with worshipping and praying hall on the upper level. In the center of this hall, there is a golden 11-meters-tall Sakyamuni Buddha statue (Lord Buddha sits on the lotus). In the room behind him, there is the altar to worship Thich Vien Giac (1930-2012) who stayed in the pagoda as the leader monk (from 1975) and held high positions in local Buddhist associations.
In the surroundings, visitors can see different Buddha statues, like white Sakyamuni (Sitting/Meditating Buddha), golden Maitreya (Laughing Budhha or Happy Buddha), white Lady Buddha (Quan Am, Quanyin, Bodhisattva, Goddess of Mercy) as well as lots of trees, flowers and fruits. Phap Lam Pagoda is much more peaceful than noisy quarters outside.
To the right of the Main hall, local people can get free medical examinations (by Vietnamese traditional ways) and be treated by medical plants, and read or bollow Buddhist books.
Along Oc Ich Khiem street near Phap Lam Pagoda, it’s possible to see many vegetarian food restaurants, eateries and vendors (and even vegetarian cooking ingredients such as rice noodles, tofu, vegetables,…). The busiest days of the month will be the 1st day and full moon (15th day) each lunar month in Vietnamese traditional calendar. On Buddha’s birthday, the 15th day of the 4th lunar month, Phap Lam Pagoda attracts lots of people.
