During the Spanish colonial era, it functioned as the city’s primary plaza major, hosting public events, bullfights, and official gatherings. At the center of the plaza stands a prominent monument dedicated to King Carlos IV of Spain, who sent life-saving smallpox vaccines to the Philippines in the early 19th century.

Third stop: Manila 1945 Memorial

The Memorare Manila 1945 Memorial is a solemn monument dedicated to the innocent civilians who lost their lives during the brutal Battle of Manila. Erected in a quiet corner of Intramuros, the bronze sculpture depicts a grieving mother holding a dead infant, surrounded by suffering figures to symbolize the horrors of war. It serves as a powerful reminder of the estimated 100,000 non-combatants who perished during the final months of World War II.

4th stop: Casa Manila (Plaza San Luis Complex)

The San Luis Complex is a beautifully restored cultural compound in Intramuros that showcases the elegant lifestyle of the upper class during the Spanish colonial period. Rizal Park, historically known as Luneta Park, is an expansive 140-acre urban park situated just outside the walled city of Intramuros. It serves as one of the most significant open green spaces in Metro Manila, holding deep historical weight as the site of major political executions and declarations of independence. The park features beautiful themed gardens, musical fountains, and wide plazas where local families gather to relax and exercise.

Top tip: It’s possible to find places to eat and drink in this park.

Inside and near the Rizal Park, visitors can visit 3 museums:

Its most striking architectural feature is the “Tree of Life” structure, a massive central pillar and glass dome that floods the interior courtyard with natural light. Inside, the exhibition halls display everything from preserved botanical specimens to a massive replica of Lolong, once the world’s largest saltwater crocodile in captivity.
