History of Con Market in Da Nang

In 1957, Han Market (Cho Han), the central market of Da Nang became overloaded by trading activities. For that reason, city leaders decided to build another market in the area. In 1958, Con Market was constructed on a sandy dune/mound, without any houses, to the west of Han Market. Its name originated from this location. In Vietnamese, Con means ‘a mound or dune’. For locals, it’s never flooded because of being higher than the surrounding area.

Con Market was located by a 4-ways crossroad where Rue de la Republique (east to west) and Rue de Sabiella (later Rue de Khai Dinh, north to south). Today, at the crossroad between Hung Vuong St and Ong Ich Khiem St. Over time, this market became a bustling hub of commerce, leading to an increase of selling stalls/kiosks and growth of trading activities in nearby streets. People could find anything they wanted, including eating, drinking and entertainment services.

On 9th February 1971, Ms Ho Thi Phuong used mine to kill the Chief of Secret Service of First Military Division of South Vietnam. Brief information about this event was carved on a memorial stele on the left wall of Con Market’s main gate. At the former parking lot of this market, today a supermarket, in 76 days from 11st March 1966 to 25th May 1966, thousands of citizens hald meetings to fight against the regime of Ngo Dinh Diem (president of South Vietnam Republic) and to demand democracy.

In December 1984, after a nationwide design competition, the building of Con Market was approved and constructed, with three floors. The winning design belonged to an architect from Ho Chi Minh city. At that time, it’s named ‘Da Nang Trading Center’ but local people felt that it’s so strange and they still used the former name to call the market. In 2012, the official title ‘Con Market’ was given back to this place. Today, it’s one of the largest and busiest wholesale markets in Da Nang.

In the near future, the new Con Market will be built, with one underground floor and three floors above the ground. Total cost could be 322 billions VND. However, until now, this project was still on hold.

As one of the largest wholesale markets in Da Nang, Con Market has different zones and each of them sells a different type of products. Compared to Han Market, there are less foreign visitors coming here to visit and go shopping. Reasons are that sellers here speak only Vietnamese and the atmosphere is more local.

The price depends on the seller, quality, brand, etc. Generally, buyers can bargain to make the price lower (if feel the stuff too expensive) or request a discount if take some stuff from one shop. We advise going around and asking the price to compare between shops, to choose the best quality and best price stuff. On the upper floor, there are fabric kiosks and tailors who can make any fashion items upon request and personal specifications.
