History of Tran Thi Ly Bridge in Da Nang
In the same place with present-day Tran Thi Ly Bridge, there was a railway bridge that existed. It’s built by the French in 1951, and named ‘De Lattre de Tassigny’ (1889-1952), a French military general during world war II and first Indochina war (Vietnamese side: Anti-French resistance war). Later, this bridge was named after ‘Trinh Minh The’ (1920-1955), a military general in the beginning of the Vietnam war and the leader of Caodaist paramilitary in South Vietnam. In 1993, it got its currently-used name ‘Tran Thi Ly Bridge’.
From 2007, Da Nang city aimed to build the new Tran Thi Ly Bridge to create another stunning addition into Han riverscape and the city’s skyline. Finally, A Finnish company won the final design, against other competitors from France, Germany, USA, Japan, China and Vietnam.
In April 2009, the new Tran Thi Ly Bridge started being built, and definitely, the old Tran Thi Ly Bridge was destroyed (by that, Nguyen Van Troi bridge is the oldest surviving bridge today). It’s inaugurated and opened to traffic on 29th March 2013, to celebrate the 38th anniversary of Da Nang liberation day (20th March 1975). Meanwhile, the Dragon bridge – another new city’s landmark was also inaugurated. Da Nang has been titled ‘city of bridges’ since then. After Tran Thi Ly construction, no other bridges are planned to span the Han river.
On 29th March 2022, tunnels and an overpass on the western side of Tran Thi Ly Bridge (crossroad 2 Thang Chin street vs Duy Tan street), was completed. Its function is to reduce traffic congestion as well as the faster way from the Da Nang airport to main beach areas.
What to Expect in Tran Thi Ly Bridge in Da Nang?
Tran Thi Ly Bridge has an (impressive) architecture and design. It looks like a boat with sails full of wind and ready to conquer the ocean. This image reminds people about fishing villages along Da Nang beaches or further, glory history of Hoi An trading port where sailboats from everywhere arrived to exchange goods with Vietnamese people. A 145-meters-tall pillar (connected) with cables, carry a heavy 6-lanes bridge road.
While standing on Tran Thi Ly Bridge, visitors enjoy a fantastic cityscape stretching along jade-color Han River. Next to it, that is Nguyen Van Troi Walking Bridge, the oldest surviving bridge (has been used since the Vietnam war 1960s). In the same direction, other bridges are also seen, including the Dragon bridge (world’s heaviest steel bridge), the Han river bridge (one of the last swing bridges in Vietnam), and Thuan Phuoc bridge (Vietnam’s longest suspension bridge with two 80m-tall pillars).
On the other side of Tran Thi Ly Bridge, in a close distance, that is the Sun Wheel of the Asia Park, one of 10 tallest observation wheels on the planet. If lucky, visitors will have a chance to meet lots of storks and other birds gathering at mangrove trees by the bridge (that’s why locals occasionally call it ‘stork island’). When look further, there is a group of rocky hills rising above the urban areas. It’s called ‘ ‘the Marble Mountains’’ or “Five-elements mountain’, an emblem of Da Nang. The Metal mountain within it was chosen to feature on the city’s official logo.
In the future, the elevator will be installed, to carry visitors to the top of the pillar. There, a 40m2 observation deck allows seeing the whole riverscape in Da Nang city centre.
To the south of Tran Thi Ly Bridge, it’s possible to see a small mangrove forest. Locals call it ‘Stork Island’ because lots of storks come here to sleep at the end of the day.

Better to Know about Tran Thi Ly (Hero)
Tran Thi Ly (Tran Thi Nham) is a Vietnamese female revolutionary hero, a member of Vietnam’s communist party, Vietnam people’s army and Liberation army of South Vietnam. She was borned in 1933 at Dien Quang commune, Dien Ban district, Quang Nam province. In 1992, at age of 58, she passed away at Da Nang (it means that Tran Thi Ly Bridge was named after her when she was still alive).
*Thi is Vietnamese traditional middle name to girls, and Van is for boys
She is a grandchild of Tran Cao Van (1866-1912), a patriot. Her parents were farmers who have six children, but her father died when she was small.
From 1945 to 1950, she received the duty for teenager and children activities in her hometown, and on 30th April 1950, she became a communist party member. After that, French soldiers captured and jailed her at a nearby station (for around 9 months). In 1952, this place was attacked by local communists and Ly was rescued.
After the Geneva 1954 conference, Vietnam was separated into South Vietnam and South Vietnam. Ngo Dinh Diem (1901-1963) became the first president of the South Vietnam Republic, and started his anti-communist activities. Later, Tran Thi Ly and other communists left their hometown and went to Da Nang city to hide away. Unfortunately, in June 1955, she was captured again and then detained in 3 prisons (one of them is the Hoi An prison). She didn’t let the tortuners and any other opponents know the information of other friends and secret places in town. Five months later, this woman was released.
