History of Thuan Phuoc Bridge in Da Nang
Once Thuan Phuoc Bridge was constructed, there were only three small bridges spanning the Han River in Da Nang (old Tran Thi Ly Bridge, Nguyen Van Troi Bridge, and the Han River Bridge). None of them could carry heavy cargo containers to the major seaport of the city Tien Sa Port. In 2004, Tien Son Bridge was inaugurated, improving the situation but it’s still dangerous for other vehicles because containers would go through the city downtown. For that reason, city leaders wanted to design a new and large bridge, to provide a quicker and safer passage to the port. It would span the estuary of the Han River, the main waterway of Da Nang, and be tall enough to allow boats and ships from the sea to go inland.
Construction of Thuan Phuoc Bridge started on 17th January 2003, and the city planned to open it in March 2005. However, due to challenges from building two giant pillars (up to over 80m, 400m apart) at the estuary of the Han River when geological characteristics are complex, and from local weather (including typhoons), it’s not completed on time.
On 19th July 2009, Thuan Phuoc Bridge was inaugurated with the attendance of Vietnam prime minister Nguyen Tan Dung, high-ranking government officials and Da Nang city authorities. Meanwhile, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Dragon Bridge construction was also held.
What to Expect in Thuan Phuoc Bridge?
At a river estuary location, Thuan Phuoc Bridge is special for its enormous size, especially two 80-meters-tall pillars that had no competitor in Vietnam when it’s inaugurated. Its design looks quite similar to the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the United States. To see the full view of Thuan Phuoc Bridge, visitors need to go to the promenade along Nhu Nguyet Street, Hai Chau district or go to Son Tra Mountain/Monkey Mountain or the rooftop of nearby buildings. In late afternoon, many locals come to the riverside park below it, to watch the sunset and later, when it’s lit up by thousands of lamps.
Thuan Phuoc Bridge carries a road which has 4 lanes for cars and motorcycles, and 2 lanes for bicycles and pedestrians. From its top, near the pillars, visitors will enjoy cool breezes blowing from the bay/sea, spectacular views and great photo opportunities. This is one of the best places to watch sunrise/sunset in Da Nang.
If look to the city, it’s possible to see poetic jade-color Han River with 4 other bridges spanning it (in turn, Han River Bridge, the Dragon Bridge, Nguyen Van Troi Bridge and Tran Thi Ly Bridge), Sun Wheel – one of tallest observation wheels on the planet, beautiful roads running along the waterfronts, and high-rise buildings/landmarks (corn-like City hall, Novotel hotel, Melia Riverfront hotel, Grand Mercure hotel, Golden Bay hotel,….). All of them make a stunning Da Nang city skyline, and a new image of Vietnam that is clean, well organized, green, and emerging. After dusk, the city itself and the bridges are lit by colorful lights. The scene is absolutely vibrant and fascinating. During competitions of the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival, Thuan Phuoc Bridge (south side) is amongst the best spots to watch amazing fireworks performances in the sky. It’s crowded here during the event.
On the other side of Thuan Phuoc Bridge, that is (blue) Da Nang bay with two mountains: Hai Van Pass to the left, often crowned by clouds and Son Tra Mountain/Monkey Mountain (a nature reserve) to the right. At the foot of Son Tra Mountain, there are the main seaport (Tien Sa Port), base of Vietnam people’s navy, and fishing boats. One stone dyke is built at the estuary to prevent or reduce alluvials carried by the Han River to the port. Throughout the day, the natural scenery is fantastic. No surprise that many people stop here to take pictures and chill. It’s even more awesome when the sun goes up or goes down. The waters are dressed in more colors than usual blue. In the evening, the view from this side is less interesting than the other side – the city.
At night, along the road below Thuan Phuoc Bridge, some street vendors will be seen, selling street foods and drinks with a quite cheap price. Locals often buy something from them and sit by the river to enjoy the colorful bridge and cool wind. It’s more peaceful here than other Han riverfront parks.
Yearly from October to January, the weather is often windy, rainy/cloudy and coldy (typhoons may occur). Visitors should check the forecast in advance before going to the top of Thuan Phuoc Bridge. The wind there is much stronger than the city.
