History of Ba Na Hills as a Hill Station

In the 19th and 20th centuries, French people colonized Vietnam. To escape the heat, they discovered places in high mountains to build hill station and then relax there. In northern Vietnam, Sapa at an elevation of about 1,600 meters, was the main hill station. Da Lat at an elevation of about 1,400 meters, became the main hill station in southern Vietnam. In central Vietnam, Ba Na Hills played the same role.

In 1901, French captain Debay found Ba Na Hills, on the top of Nui Chua Mountain. It lies at an elevation of about 1,400 meters, so the temperature is always lower than the city by a few degrees.

In 1945, French people withdrew from Vietnam after Vietnamese struggles for independence. Therefore, Ba Na Hills was abandoned. Later, in the Vietnam War, the US army camped here but not for relaxation and recreation activities.

Since 2009, Sun Group has managed Ba Na Hills and constructed new hotels here. Ruins of French villas and houses still remain and are protected. In the Le Jardin d’Amour gardens, Debay Wine Cellar is the most interesting site. It’s dug in 1923, to preserve bottles of wine that were owned by 13 French men. Nowadays, it becomes a museum showing visitors history of the mountain and in its end, the bar serves wine and barbecues.

Is It Worth Staying in Ba Na Hills Vietnam?

Staying in Ba Na Hills is worth it. Here are reasons why:

– The weather in Ba Na Hills is perfect for relaxation and recreation. Here, the temperature is around 20oC in daytime and lower in the evening. The air is extremely fresh because the park is in the middle of a nature reserve with immense old forests.

– One of the exclusive experiences offered to hotel guests is the chance to take the earliest cable car to Golden Hands Bridge.

– Hotel at Ba Na Hills is managed by one of six largest hospitality companies in the world and the largest in Europe. Therefore, visitors can trust the service and a good experience during the whole stay.

– Have more than 1 day to explore Ba Na Hills, a huge amusement park.

– Have the chance to see the sunrise from the highest point in the area (over 1,400 meters above sea level) and awe-inspiring views to the entire area below. The hotel at Ba Na Hills is the highest hotel in this part of Vietnam.

– Have a discount when buying a Ba Na Hills ticket and some services/activities in the park during the stay.

However, staying in Ba Na Hills may be not suitable for those who can not take the cable car (scare of height, heart disease, vestibular disease, etc), dislike the cold temperature, like discovering (far distance from other famous places, must pay extra fee for cable car tickets, high cost for transport), or want to escape from hustle and bustle (the park is very bustling in the daytime).

How to Get to Ba Na Hills Hotel 2024

The only hotel now in Ba Na Hills, Mercure Hotel, is in the French Village which lies on the top of the mountain. Generally, its address is Hoa Ninh commune, Hoa Vang district, Da Nang city, Vietnam.

Ways to Go to Ba Na Hills Hotel’s Front Desk

The front desk of Mercure Hotel at Ba Na Hills is within the Thac Toc Tien Station. To get there, visitors need to walk to the Hoi An Station and then take escalators or use the transfer by electric buggy car. Business hours at this front desk is 8 am to 5 pm everyday.

From Da Nang/Hoi An (nearest city) or Da Nang International Airport (nearest airport), visitors can take a car/minivan/bus to Ba Na Hills. The drive is about 45 minutes if going from Da Nang and about 1 hour if going from Hoi An. The car will drop off passengers in Ba Na Hills’s main entrance or car parking lot (from here, it’s needed to have a short transfer by electric buggy car to the main entrance). If traveling by a minivan or bus, it’s possible to drop off at Ba Na Hills’s main entrance.

From the main entrance, visitors need to go towards the Big Gate with words ‘Sun World Ba Na Hills’, walk inside, take the escalator/elevator on the right side and then follow the signs or staff’s instruction to the Hoi An Station. Here, do not take the cable and ask the staff where to take the free transfer by buggy car up to Thac Toc Tien Station. However, if use this way to get there, it’s still needed to climb stairs, but not too many. Occasionally, visitors must walk and use the elevator to reach Thac Toc Tien Station.

The Cable Car to French Village

From the front desk of Mercure Hotel at Thac Toc Tien Station, visitors can take the cable car directly to the hotel on the mountaintop. The cable car ride is 15-20 minutes long, depending on weather, and the arrival station is the L’Indochine Station. After getting off the cable car, visitors need to take the escalator or walk upstairs to see the French Village. Mercure Hotel is just a few walks from L’Indochine Station.

Because Mercure Hotel has different buildings, therefore guests still need to walk to see the exact place to stay. Anyway, none of them is far from each other. If book more than 2 rooms, do not worry about the distance between rooms.

Bell men in Mercure Hotel Ba Na Hills will help guests to bring the luggage from the front desk down the mountain to the mountaintop.
