History of Phu Quoc Prison (Coconut Prison)
Phu Quoc Prison (Coconut Prison) is a military prison constructed and used by French colonists from 1941 to 1944. There are about 1,000 Vietnamese prisoners here during this period, mostly political prisoners. After that, it’s abandoned.
On June 1953, French colonists again established Phu Quoc Prison. In this time, the total area of this prison was up to 40 hectares, making it one of the biggest war prisons in the Indochina (which covered current Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia). In some periods, there are 14,000 Vietnamese prisoners captured and sent here.
After the 1954 Geneva convention, Phu Quoc Prison was closed.
From June 1967 to March 1973 (the Vietnam War), state of South Vietnam and the United States constructed new Phu Quoc Prison on the same location. It covered an area of 400 hectares, and was used for detention of Vietcong (communists in the South Vietnam) and solders from the North Vietnam. Their number was up to 40,000 people.
After the fall of Saigon on 30th April 1975, Phu Quoc Prison was closed permanently.
On 31st December 2014, Phu Quoc Prison was honored by Vietnam government as special national monument. This became the first site titled in Kien Giang province (today An Giang province).

How to Get to Ho Phu Quoc Prison (Coconut Prison)
Phu Quoc Prison (Coconut Prison) is located on the coast in Southern Phu Quoc Island, to the east of Duong Dong and to the north of An Thoi.
From Duong Dong town, the capital of Phu Quoc Island, the distance to Ho Quoc Pagoda will be 25 kilometers. The quickest transport is by private taxi/car/bus, and the cheapest transport is by motorbike (self driving). If like going by motorbike, follow Tran Hung Dao Road or 30 Thang 4 Road (southwards) until the crossroad of DT46 Road (southeast of the airport). After that, go along DT46 until this point on map 10°05’13.7″N 104°00’47.4″E. Turn left, keep going straight to see Ho Quoc Pagoda.
From An Thoi town or Sunset Town, the distance to Ho Quoc Pagoda will be around 10 kilometers. The quickest transport is by private taxi/car/bus, and the cheapest transport is by motorbike (self driving). If like going by motorbike, find the fastest way to DT46 and then go northwards until this point on map 10°05’13.7″N 104°00’47.4″E. Turn right, keep going straight to see Ho Quoc Pagoda. Between An Thoi and the pagoda, visitors can visit Phu Quoc Prison or two beautiful beaches Bai Sao and Bai Khem.
From the Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC), the distance to Sunset Town is 15 kilometers. The quickest way to get there is taking a private car/bus.
