History of Nhu Mother Monument

At crossroad of Dien Bien Phu Street, Tran Cao Van Street and Huynh Ngoc Hue Street in Da Nang, Nhu Mother Monument is constructed in 1985 (10 years after the reunification of Vietnam). This 12-meter-tall monument is to commemorate indomitable spirit and patriotism of Nhu Mother (or Lê Thị Danh). She was a heroic revolutionary base in Thanh Khe, Da Nang, who risked her life by sheltering soldiers and digging secret tunnels in an enemy-controlled area during the war. Her ultimate sacrifice came in December 1968 when, surrounded by enemy soldiers, she shouted a warning to the soldiers hidden in her house, choosing death over betraying the cause. Her selfless act of defiance and patriotism is why she is revered as a Heroic Mother by Vietnam government.

Different from others, Nhu Mother Monument was designed by a famed Vietnamese sculptor Pham Van Hang. To built it, he used approximately 7,000 bomb and bullet casings collected from around Da Nang, symbolizing the horrors of war transformed into a symbol of resilience.

On the way from Da Nang city to Ba Na Hills or Hai Van Pass or Hue, visitors will go pass by Nhu Mother Monument.
