History of Linh Ung Pagoda in Ba Na Hills

On 21st September 1999, Linh Ung Pagoda at Ba Na Hills was constructed by the request of Nguyen Ba Thanh (president of Da Nang City People’s Committee), and Thich Thien Nguyen monk (leader of Da Nang City’s Buddhist Association). This temple aims to attract more visitors to Ba Na Hills at that time.

On 6th March 2004, Linh Ung Pagoda at Ba Na Hills was inaugurated and opened to the public. To sightsee this new attraction, local people and tourists still have to get there by the old road built by the French in the 20th century. It’s narrow, winding, and dangerous in the evening or rainy season. For that reason, there were not too many people coming to the pagoda. Those who visited it often stayed overnight if possible, to enjoy the cold weather in the mountains.

In 2009, the first cable car at Ba Na Hills was completed and used. Its length is about 5 km, longer than any other cable cars in the world at that time. This cable car carries visitors to the hill where Linh Ung Pagoda is located.

151 days after the inauguration of Linh Ung Pagoda at Ba Na Hills, the second Linh Ung pagoda in Da Nang, the city decided to build one more Linh Ung Pagoda in Son Tra Peninsula plus a giant Lady Buddha Statue (67 meters). On 30th July 2010, it’s completed. Since then, three temples have created a Buddhist triangle with Da Nang city as the central point, aiming to protect citizens from natural disasters, such as typhoons.

What to See in Linh Ung Pagoda Ba Na Hills?

The Buddha Hall

This is the most important building in Linh Ung Pagoda Ba Na Hills. It sits on a lower place than Le Jardin d’Amour Gardens, Golden Hands Bridge, and Debay Wine Cellar, so visitors need to walk downstairs to see it. Following Vietnamese traditional principles, it leans against the mountains and looks towards the sea.

It’s a single building in which three buddhas are worshipped: Sakyamuni or Phat Thich Ca Mau Ni (buddha) in the middle, Samantabhadra or Bo Tat Pho Hien (bodhisattva) on the left, and Manjushri or Bo Tat Van Thu (bodhisattva) on the right. Sakyamuni is the Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, one of the most popular religions in the world. Manjushri bodhisattva represents intelligence and wisdom. Samantabhadra bodhisattva represents kindness and happiness.

Outside the Buddha Hall, there is a statue of Maitreya Buddha or Phat Di Lac. It’s known as ‘Laughing Buddha’ or ‘Fat Buddha’. He always smiles or laughs, and has a big stomach that represents abundance and happiness in Vietnamese culture.

The main entrance of Linh Ung Pagoda Ba Na Hills draws most visitors. It has a blue denim color, with many dragon decorations and meaningful sentences of Buddha’s teachings, in Vietnamese or Chinese languages. When standing here, visitors can see a wonderful panoramic view in the front. That view includes dense forests and rolling mountains in Ba Na Hills (national park), lakes, rivers, farmlands, beaches, city, villages, and a blue sea. On many days of the year, clouds or fog just make this scenery dreamy and heavenly. For that reason, travelers call the gate ‘heaven gate’ and want to have photos here, for social media. Along its staircase, there are a couple of blue and yellow dragons, also good for pictures.

Shakyamuni Buddha Statue

This white statue is 27 meters tall, standing on the top of a hill. The Buddha overlooks the city and in local belief, he blesses local people a peaceful and happy life. From many places in the park, visitors can see it. It’s also one of the most Instagrammable spots in Ba Na Hills. See more information & details

Stupa of Thich Thien Nguyen Monk

The stupa (burial tower) of Thich Thien Nguyen monk is in the middle of the staircase from Linh Ung Pagoda to the giant Buddha statue, next to the temple for Goddess of Forest. Therefore, it’s located on a higher place than the pagoda and lower place than the Buddha. For monks and locals, this tower is very holy.

Thich Thien Nguyen (birthname Ho Tan) was borned in 1946 in Hoa Quy ward, Ngu Hanh Son district, Da Nang city, in a Vietnamese family with Buddhist tradition. On 19th September 2016, he passed away while staying in Linh Ung Pagoda at Son Tra Peninsula. He was the smallest amongst 10 siblings. At age of 19, he went to a Buddhist monastery and was willing to practice Buddha teachings at a temple in the Marble Mountains (a famous Buddhist mountain near his village). Later, he became the monk in the 43rd generation of Linji school of Buddhism and in the 10th generation of Chuc Thanh school of Buddhism. After going to many places in southern Vietnam, in 1975, he returned to Linh Ung Pagoda in the Marble Mountains. In 1989, he led the restoration of its main worshipping hall, construction of the monk’s house and towers. In 1999, Linh Ung Pagoda at Ba Na Hills was built from its suggestion.

Temple of Princess of Forest

This is a small temple which lies next to the burial tower of monk Thich Thien Nguyen. It’s dedicated to worship of the Princess of Forest (or Goddess of Forest) who supervises the mountain where Linh Ung Pagoda and Ba Na Hills are located. That’s why phoenixes are used to decorate it, instead of dragons.

Dress Code at Linh Ung Pagoda of Ba Na Hills

Linh Ung Pagoda is a Buddhist temple and a holy place, so all visitors should wear respectfully. It’s needed to use a shirt covering the armpits, shoulder and navel, and a pants covering the upper knees. For example, tank top, crop top, and shorts are not appropriate. Making sure that nowhere is see-through. Vietnamese traditional costume – Ao dai (the long dress) is highly recommended by local authorities.

When entering the worshipping room, it’s needed to take shoes off (wearing shocks is okay), remove hat, rain poncho and sunglasses (for the umbrella, don’t bring inside!).

If it’s hot and humid, visitors can prepare a scarf or sarong to cover while being around holy places. It’s okay to not wear it during the hike. Sometimes, the temple gives visitors a long piece of fabric to cover if they want to go in the worshipping room, but sometimes not available. Bring your own! Shops near the elevator may sell when needed.
