Itinerary

Meet up

Meet up time: 4:00 PM (local time)

Our guide will see you at the meeting point – Hoi An Post Office, 6 Tran Hung Dao Street, Minh An ward, Hoi An city.

Try Banh mi chay at the best stall

Visit the stall of a local woman who practices Buddha’s teachings and has sold Banh mi chay (vegetarian sandwich) for +15 years. Today, it’s a favorite spot for both locals and tourists.

Her vegetarian Banh mi offers a delightful, flavorful take on the classic Vietnamese sandwich, often featuring savory tofu, mushrooms, or mock meats paired with fresh herbs and pickled vegetables in a crispy baguette. See more details

Black sesame soup

Visit home of Mr Ngo Thieu, who has been honored with the title ‘pudding master’ for making and selling the traditional sweet black sesame soup (xi ma or chi ma phu) for decades. After his death, his family members still keep the tradition of making this soup.

Try black sesame soup, a unique, traditional dessert with roots in Chinese culinary culture. This subtly sweet, dark, and velvety soup is made from ground black sesame seeds, combined with ingredients like kudzu/sweet potato starch, sugar, and sometimes fragrant herbs for a distinctive nutty and nourishing flavor. See more details

Ba Le Well

Visit Ba Le Well, dating back to the 10th century and dug by the Cham people, the ancient Ba Le Well is revered as a vital cultural and culinary fixture in Hoi An, famous for its uniquely pure water considered essential for making traditional dishes like Cao lau noodles (will try later in this tour).

Despite the advent of modern plumbing, a few dedicated individuals still sustain a living by carrying and selling this prized well water to local restaurants, thus preserving a centuries-old culinary tradition.

Try Hoi An's specialty noodles

Visit the only pure vegetarian eatery in Hoi An’s Old Town today, that is run by a local family for some decades. Tucked away in a small laneway, it’s a peaceful and cozy atmosphere. Everyday, this is a popular spot for local vegetarians and Buddhists to have lunch or dinner.

Cao lau noodles (Cao lau chay): uses chewy, distinct Hoi An noodles and a rich, light broth. Seasoned tofu and mushrooms replace pork, served with local herbs, greens, and crunchy rice paper croutons. See more details

Mi quang noodles (Mi quang chay): features wide, turmeric noodles in a concentrated vegetable broth. Topped with seasoned tofu, mushrooms, peanuts, and fresh herbs, it is always served with a crispy sesame rice cracker. See more details

Try traditional cakes at street vendor

The next place will be a small street vendor who sells Vietnamese and Chinese traditional cakes all day. Here, you will try these dishes:

– Banh xoai (‘mango cake’): a chewy, mochi-like treat has an outer skin made from glutinous sticky rice flour and is filled with a sweet mixture of crushed peanuts, sugar, and often black or white sesame seeds. See more details

– Banh it la gai (ramie leaf rice cake): a unique Vietnamese sweet dumpling, famous in the Central Coast region. Its dark, chewy, sticky rice exterior is made distinctive by incorporating ramie leaf paste (lá gai). This wrapping holds a sweet filling, usually a creamy mixture of mung beans and shredded coconut, then steamed in a banana leaf. See more details

Banh cam (sesame ball): a chewy, glutinous rice flour shell entirely coated in white sesame seeds, which surrounds a sweet, moist filling traditionally made from mung bean paste and sometimes shredded coconut. See more details

Walk through Hoi An Central Market's food court

The food court inside Hoi An Central Market is a vibrant, bustling sensory experience where the fragrant aromas of cooking fill the air and local life unfolds around the communal tables. This is a must-visit destination for travelers looking to sample authentic Central Vietnamese preparations from multiple vendors in a lively, affordable, and quintessential market atmosphere.

Try fresh, exotic fruits

Visit a fruit store at Hoi An Central Market, the biggest fresh market in town, and taste new, exotic fruits that you never try before.

Have a dessert at night market

Walk through a night market with numerous street food and souvenir stalls. It’s less busy than the famous one near Japanese Bridge. Here, you’ll have a dessert: Che or Tau hu:

– Che (sweet soup): served hot or cold and combines ingredients like beans, fruits, glutinous rice, and jellies in a sweet liquid, typically coconut milk or water. See more details

Tofu pudding (if Che is unavailable): a warm, delicate Vietnamese dessert made from silken tofu pudding. It is typically served with a thin, sweet syrup flavored with fresh ginger, making it a light and comforting treat. See more details

End the tour

Our Hoi An vegetarian food tour will end in the Old town. After saying goodbye to our guide, you can keep exploring the town nightlife on your own. Thank you very much!
