Better to Know about the East Sea
The park is named after the East Sea (Vietnamese: Bien Dong), the main sea and the sea to the east of Vietnam. It’s a magical sea in the western Pacific Ocean region. Its English name is the South China Sea, but this name is prohibited to be used inside the territory of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The total area is approx 3,500,000 km2.
The East Sea is bounded by Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia ‘peninsula’ to the west, Malaysian Borneo Island, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia to the south, the Philippines and Taiwan Island to the east, and China in the north. It has two major bays: the Gulf of Tonkin between China and Vietnam, and the Gulf of Thailand between Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia.
On the other side, there are two archipelagos in the East Sea: Hoang Sa and Truong Sa (English names: Paracel and Spratly Islands). Both are subjects to competing claims of sovereignty by many countries, including Vietnam. Vietnamese discovered, managed, and controlled these groups of islands and reefs from hundreds of years ago. To remind and educate generations of Vietnamese about this truth, Da Nang city leaders named the park ‘the East Sea Park’. More meaningfully, Hoang Sa or the Paracel Islands is under the administration of this city.

Sculpture of Au Co Mother
On the square of the East Sea Park, there is the Sculpture of Au Co Mother. It’s placed here at midnight on 30th June 2007, and inaugurated at 7:30 am on the next day. The author is a famous local sculptor Le Cong Thanh (1932-2019), one of the greatest Vietnamese sculptors in the 20th century. He and his team spent 45 days making it, from pieces of white marble. According to him, he visited this park in 2006, and got impressed by its location. He said that it’s a prime location, and a monument with national spirit should be here. The sculpture of Au Co Mother was his gift to the city then. To see more works of art from Le Cong Thanh sculptor, we recommend visiting Da Nang Fine Arts Museum.
According to the 15th-century Complete Annals of Dai Viet, Au Co is the daughter of De Lai, an emperor and descendant of the Divine Farmer (Than Nong, Shennong). She is good at growing mulberry, raising silkworms, and weaving silk in heaven. One day, she visits a beautiful place on Earth (somewhere in present-day Vietnam), and here, meets an intelligent, educated, and handsome man named Lac Long Quan. After that, they fall in love and the guy proposes to her.
After getting married, Au Co and Lac Lac Quan live together in Nghia Linh Mountain (today Phu Tho province), and then bore an egg sac that includes 100 children collectively (who are considered as first ancestors of Vietnamese people). In the noon time, on the 15th day of the last lunar month, it hatches. Later, 50 children follow their mother to mountains, and 50 children follow their father to the sea. For that reason, Vietnamese people are called themselves ‘children of dragons and immortal’. In their belief, they need to love each other, no matter what, because of the same parents.
Around the statue, visitors can see approx 1,500 local doves, to take pictures and feed them. These birds represent the peace, freedom, and love. For that reason, the second name of the East Sea Park is the Peace Park.
