Better to Know about Dinh Cau Temple (Phu Quoc)
Sitting atop a small outcrop by a river estuary (where Duong Dong River meets the sea), Dinh Cau Temple was established in the 17th century by fishermen who originated from central Vietnam. Current worshipping building was built in 1937, and renovated in 1997. In a local story, the rock where it situates, emerged from the sea during a storm, and by that, fishermen could come back safely.
Today, Dinh Cau Temple is used to worship the Goddess of Sea, and her sons Cau Qui and Cau Tai. Fishermen on the island have believed that after its construction, there is no typhoons in the area, and the sea is peaceful. On the 15th and 16th days of the 10th month, a festival takes place to commemorate and honor the Goddess, attracting thousands of prayers and pilgrims. It’s the largest traditional festival on the whole island of Phu Quoc.
By the main shrine, there is a statue of standing Lady Buddha (or Guan Yin, Goddess of Sea) where locals come to pray before going fishing (like to be safe, to be lucky, to catch lots of fishes).
There are about 30 stairs to Dinh Cau Temple, so it won’t be too difficult for seniors and small kids.
Due to important location for boat traffic, a small lighthouse was constructed from 1937 to 1947 next to Dinh Cau Temple. From here, the view to the sea is pretty, and the breeze is extremely cool.
Dinh Cau Temple is a good place to watch sunset in Phu Quoc. Not only the top of the rock, the wave breaker near this temple also provides many opportunities.
In the afternoon, around the entrance of Dinh Cau Temple, there are many street vendors selling food, beverages, and souvenirs. It’s possible to see keo chi (dragon’s beard candy), grilled eggs, grilled pork skewers, grilled beef in betel leaf, fried fish balls in fish sauce, etc. Some other vendors sell lottery tickets here for prayers who want to have luck.
There is a model of fish sauce barrel near Dinh Cau Temple, honoring the long-standing fish sauce making industry of the island.
In 2012, Dinh Cau Temple was recognized to be historical and scenic spot by Vietnam’s government.

Dress Code at Dinh Cau Temple (Phu Quoc)
Dinh Cau Temple is a temple, so all visitors should wear respectfully. It’s needed to use a shirt covering the armpits, shoulder and navel, and pants covering the upper knees. For example, tank top, crop top, shorts are not appropriate. Making sure that nowhere is see-through. Vietnamese traditional costume – Ao dai (the long dress) is highly recommended from local authorities.
Before entering the worshipping building, it’s needed to take shoes off (wearing shocks is okay), remove hat, rain poncho and sunglasses (for the umbrella, don’t bring inside!).
By the way, every visitor is advised getting one incense stick only if want to pray. The smoke from burning incenses will harm cultural and architectural heritages (like fire). It also helps to reduce air pollution.
