Ba Na Hills (Vietnam) on Map
History of Ba Na Hills (Ba Na Hill Station)
Originally, Ba Na Hills was one of hill Stations established by French people in 20th century in Vietnam. Others are Da Lat (south), Sapa (north), Ba Vi (north), Bach Ma (central), and Tam Dao (north), and all still exist. Throughout the colonial period, they used these places for leisure, relaxation and recreation.
On the top of Nui Chua – the highest mountain of the area, at the elevation of about 1,400 meters, the temperature is always comfortable in Ba Na Hills. It can be cold by night or during the wet season. Embraced by dense forests (today a national nature reserve), the air here is extremely fresh. 10 years after being firstly discovered, on November 1911, French people decided to protect this place for further research. They wanted to find somewhere close to Da Nang (known as Tourance) to replace other resorts.
After World war I, around 1919, Ba Na Hills was finally chosen to be /hill Station/. In 1928, the road leading to it was built, connecting with Da Nang city, highways and railways. French could drive car to get here (near the top, it’s needed to stop and use a carrage to go to higher places). Thanks to this traffic convenience, more people visited Ba Na Hills, mostly French people and high-class or rich Vietnamese people. Private wooden villas, restaurants, wine cellar, post office, playgrounds,… were gradually constructed.
Once abandoned in World war II, Ba Na Hills had more than 170 villas. During the Vietnam war (1960s, 1970s), due to its high altitude that was so strategic for military, camps of the American army based here.
From 1997 to 2007, Ba Na Suoi Mo tourist area was owned and managed by the government. It didn’t really attracted much tourists as expected. By that reason, its management was passed to Sun Group, a private Vietnamese-owned company (up to this day).
Fact: the Sun Group is the investor and owner of almost all cable cars within Vietnam, including Sun World Fansipan Legend (Sapa), Sun World Ba Den Mountain (Tay Ninh), Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park (Phu Quoc), Sun World Ha Long Park, Sun World Cat Ba (Hai Phong).
In 2009, the first cable car at Ba Na Hills was opened to the public. It won 2 world records: the longest cable car in the world, and the largest difference between the lowest and highest Stations in elevation. Since then, several other cable cars and a plenty of buildings have been invested, including hotels, restaurants, amusement park, temples, gardens, castles, …. Nowadays, there are 6 cable cars in total at Sun World Ba Na Hills.
In 2018, the Golden Hands Bridge was opened, quickly becoming a dream place to go for many travelers in the world. It’s honored as one of world’s new wonders by media and press.
Names of Ba Na Hills
The most popular story to explain the name origin of Ba Na Hills is about French discovery to the mountain in 20th century. At that time, they saw many banana trees here, and by that, called it ‘Banana Hills’. Over the years, this name was shorten to be ‘Ba Na Hills’.
Some researchers said that Ba Na Hills is a place to worship Thien Y Ana goddess or Ponagar goddess by Cham people, before 14th century. When they left, Vietnamese people came to live and called the mountain ‘Ba Na’ (meaning ‘Lady (Thien Y) Ana’).
According to some sources of information, Ba Na Hills is named and traditionally owned by K’tur people who has been still living at its foot today. They devide the mountain into three zones: upper Na, middle Na and lower Na (Na means farmland). By that, it’s known as three Na or Ba Na.

Cable Cars to Ba Na Hills
Full detail: Ba Na Hills Cable Cars: Ticket, Stations, Schedule, More
To go up and visit the rest of Sun World Ba Na Hills complex, visitors need to get a cable car ride. The first cable car was opened here in 2009, and won 2 Guiness records: world’s longest cable car (about 5km long) and world’s largest elevation difference between first and last stations (about 1,400m). Later cable cars also are world record holders, providing visitors a such fantastic experience. The cars themselves go across a national park with rolling hills, waterfalls, outcrops soaring from dense jungles where an abundance of animals live and through the cloud.
Until 2024, there are 4 cable cars at Ba Na Hills in operation, with 10 passenger Stations:
– Ba Na Hills cable car 1: from Suoi Mo Station to Ba Na Station

One cabin can carry from 6 to 10 people (less and more depending on passenger’s size and weight, weather), and if not crowded, a private car will be offered for couples, families, groups of friends,… For safety reasons, cable cars can be shut down and the cars don’t move anymore, in bad weather situations (lighting, thunder, heavy rain, strong wind, typhoons,…)
A roundtrip cable car ride is included in all Ba Na Hills tickets. Connecting cable cars inside the park, between Golden Bridge’s hill and French Village’s hill, is free to use.
Cable car reschedule often changes for safe reasons, operation reason (low/high hours), weather, maintenance,…. If want to see everything or refuse confusions, visitors should go early in the day or go with a local guide.
The busiest time of the day is 9 am to 11 am when big group tours arrive.
