Better to Know about Ho Quoc Pagoda (Phu Quoc)

Sitting on the top of a hill between dense forests of Phu Quoc National Park and the sea, Ho Quoc Pagoda is the largest Buddhist temple and mediation center in Phu Quoc Vietnam. It spans up to 110 hectares, and was constructed from October 2011 to December 2012 by request of Vietnamese military general Tran Van Tra. Following traditional temple principles, this pagoda leans against the mountain and overlooks the ocean.

To visit Ho Quoc Pagoda, visitors need to climb stairs from the main road to the triple gate first. After that, keep climbing stairs to see two worshipping halls, a bell pavilion and a drum pavilion. The shrines are designed with an architecture in Ly and Tran dynasties (10th to 14th centuries) when Buddhism reached its peak in Vietnam. The first shrine is to venerate Buddha and the second one is used for worship of Vietnamese king Tran Nhan Tong and two patriarchs of Truc Lam Buddhism Huyen Quang and Phap Loa. Dating from the 13rd century, Truc Lam Buddhism is a unique Vietnamese Buddhist tradition.

From the first shrine and the drum tower, there are stairs up to a giant Lady Buddha statue. Lady Buddha is known as Goddess of Mercy, Goddess of Sea, or Guanyin in Chinese. At her base, there is a small shrine for prayers.

On the lower locations, Pavilion of Lady Buddha, Pavilion of Kṣitigarbha Buddha, and a model of famous One Pillar Pagoda in Hanoi Vietnam are also worth taking a look.

In the front of Ho Quoc Pagoda’s entrance gate, it’s possible to find stairs down to the beach. This peaceful beach is dotted with stones and rocks, providing a view to Gulf of Thailand and capes covered by lush trees as well as extremely cool and fresh breeze. It’s absolutely a perfect place for nature lovers.

There is a vegetarian restaurant near the bus parking lot at Ho Quoc Pagoda.

Dress Code at Ho Quoc Pagoda (Phu Quoc)

Ho Quoc Pagoda is a Buddhist temple, so all visitors should wear respectfully. It’s needed to use a shirt covering the armpits, shoulder and navel, and pants covering the upper knees. For example, tank top, crop top, shorts are not appropriate. Making sure that nowhere is see-through. Vietnamese traditional costume – Ao dai (the long dress) is highly recommended from local authorities.

Before entering the worshipping building, it’s needed to take shoes off (wearing shocks is okay), remove hat, rain poncho and sunglasses (for the umbrella, don’t bring inside!).

By the way, every visitor is advised getting one incense stick only if want to pray. The smoke from burning incenses will harm cultural and architectural heritages (like fire). It also helps to reduce air pollution.

At the entrance of Ho Quoc Pagoda, visitors can see free dresses or shirts if forget wearing long clothes. If want to buy, there is a shop to the right.
