Itinerary

Pick up/Meet up

Pick up/meet up time: 8:00 AM or 1:00 PM (local time)

Our guide will see you at your hotel (or meeting point) in Hoi An city center.

Ride across the iron bridge

The Cam Kim commuter bridge spans the Thu Bon River, seamlessly linking the peaceful rural landscapes of Cam Kim Island to the urban center of Hoi An. By replacing traditional ferry crossings, this infrastructure has greatly improved daily mobility for local residents and opened up the island’s traditional craft villages to pedestrians, cyclists, and light vehicles.

Rice paper/noodle making

Visit a local family whose members have made rice papers and rice noodles for some decades. One of them will show you the process to make the rice paper by rice milk and then you have the chance to try your hand at making your own rice papers. After that, the artisan shows the way to make the noodles from fresh rice papers and how to make banh dap (‘smashing rice papers’), a specialty food in Hoi An. See more details

Sedge mat weaving

Continue riding through rural villages and visit a local family making traditional sedge mats. This craft is also one of the main local industries in Cam Kim Island, Hoi An. Our guide will help you to communicate with artisans and interact with them to know better their life. Later, you have the chance to try your hand at making the mats by colorful sedges. See more details

Meet a fishing net weaving family

Net weaving and mending are deeply rooted traditional livelihoods practiced in riverine and fishing communities near Hoi An, such as Tra Nhieu village. Local artisans utilize intricate hand-knotting techniques to create and repair the durable gear essential for the region’s vibrant river and coastal fishing industry.

Catch fish by traditional net (rớ chồ)

In Hoi An, local fishers use the “rớ chồ” (fixed lift net, locally referred to as ro cho) anchored on rivers like the Thu Bon to catch fish. After submerging and raising the large square net using a mechanical winch system, a fisherman paddles a small boat underneath to sweep the trapped fish toward a central pocket and scoop them into a basket.

See the Whale temple

Visit the Whale Temple (known as Lang Ong) is a sacred place where fishing communities worship the whale as a benevolent deity, or “Lord Whale,” who protects sailors from storms and shipwrecks. These unique sites often house the skeletal remains of stranded whales, which are interred with elaborate funeral rites to honor their spiritual role as guardians of the sea.

Basket boat in coconut forest

Discover an untouched, little-known water coconut (nipa palm) forest by basket boat, a unique fishing boat in central Vietnam region. Immerse yourself into the nature and try your luck at crab fishing. This is a non-touristy activity in Hoi An. See more details

Cycle back to Hoi An
