Do You Need a Tour Guide for My Son Sanctuary?

You do not strictly need a tour guide, as you can explore the site independently. However, because the on-site signage only provides basic information, a guide or audio tour is highly recommended to fully appreciate the rich history of the ancient Champa civilization. In this article, HoiAn Day Trip Company will provide more information.

You Don’t Need A Guide If Just Want to Go Around My Son Sanctuary

Going to the temples at My Son Sanctuary is not difficult and visitors absolutely can do it without a tour guide.

From the entrance (ticket counter), enter and walk 5 minutes to see the My Son Museum (on the right). From this museum, walk cross the bridge to take the buggy ride and go further inside the sanctuary. After getting the buggy, follow one of the paved paths to see temples. There is a daily show at the public theater near Temple H or Temple BCD.

You Need A Guide When Like to Learn About History at My Son Sanctuary

While exploring My Son Sanctuary alone offers tranquility, visiting without a guide means missing the profound historical and cultural significance hidden within the stones. To an untrained eye, the site may look like a collection of beautifully weathered red-brick ruins. However, a knowledgeable local guide breathes life into the complex, decoding the sophisticated architecture and the mystery of how the ancient Cham people built these structures without mortar.

They illuminate the spiritual world of the Champa Kingdom, explaining the intricate carvings of Hindu deities like Shiva and the symbolic layout of the sanctuaries. Furthermore, a guide points out the stark history carved into the landscape, such as the massive bomb craters left by the Vietnam War. Having an expert storyteller transforms your visit from a simple scenic walk into a deeply resonant journey through centuries of lost history.

How to Get A Tour Guide for My Son Sanctuary

There are 3 ways to get a English-speaking guide for My Son Sanctuary:

Way 1: hire a guide right at My Son Sanctuary. The availability is 6:00 am to 5:00 pm. The fee is 100.000-200.000 VND. There are 2 places where visitors can book a guide: (1) ticket counter at entrance of the sanctuary and (2) the guide office near the second buggy station (after getting off the buggy, walk cross the cafe/shop and then immediately look to the left to see this house).

Pros: Do not have to reserve and pay in advance.

On-site guides at My Son Sanctuary can speak both English and Vietnamese, so you can book for your family.

Cons: Nobody can guarantee that there is a tour guide available when you come. If need one in the early morning (like 6-8 am), it may be impossible because the guides may not at My Son Sanctuary yet.

Way 2: hire a guide from the city. There are many independent/freelancer tour guides in Da Nang and Hoi An to contact. The easiest way to find them is looking around on social media channels like Facebook, Tiktok, Youtube, Instagram…., where they introduce themselves and share good trips with other visitors (including reviews). If you don’t use social media, just Google.

Pros:

Cons: Have to pay a higher price than booking a guide right at My Son Sanctuary.

Difficult to book during high tourist seasons, because good tour guides often work with company.

Way 3: book a tour.

Best Way to Get Tour Guide for My Son Sanctuary

Choose an on-site tour guide if you’re in in the following situations:

1. You choose to ride a scooter or drive yourself

If you are an independent traveler riding a motorbike from Hoi An or Da Nang to enjoy the scenic countryside, you won’t have a guide with you on the road. Buying an entry ticket and hiring an on-site guide means you keep 100% of your freedom on the road but still get the historical context once you step into the sacred valley.

2. You already booked a private car transfer

Many travelers prefer booking a private car/Grab from Da Nang or Hoi An because it is flexible, air-conditioned, and allows them to pair My Son with other stops like the Marble Mountains. Drivers do not walk into the ruins with you. Hiring an on-site guide bridges that gap seamlessly at the entrance.

3. You are traveling on a budget but still want a human guide

Booking a private tour from a travel agency that includes a private vehicle and a guide from the city can be pricey. Hiring an on-site guide at the gate is significantly cheaper because you are only paying for their time inside the sanctuary, avoiding the cost of a guide’s travel time from the city.
