Things to Do in Duy Hai Fishing Village
Duy Hai Fishing Village is a Vietnamese fishing village near Cua Dai (meaning ‘large estuary’), the estuary where Thu Bon River meets the East Vietnam Sea (the Pacific Ocean). This is the largest river in Quang Nam Province, Central Vietnam, stretching approximately 205 kilometers from its source at Ngoc Linh Mountain (2,598m) in the Annamite Range. On the opposite bank, there is Cam Thanh Coconut Village and its Bay Mau Coconut Village.
Duy Hai Fishing Village is named after ‘Duy Hai commune’ of Duy Xuyen district where it’s located in. When ‘Duy’ is the first name of the district, ‘Hai’ means ‘sea’ or ‘ocean’.
In Duy Hai Fishing Village, visitors often go to these places:
+ Duy Hai Fishing Market: operates as a bustling hub where local fishermen still use traditional “basket boats” and small wooden vessels to bring in their overnight catch at dawn. The market preserves ancient trading customs, with buyers and sellers haggling over fresh seafood spread directly on the ground or in woven bamboo baskets rather than using modern industrial stalls. This vibrant scene offers a raw glimpse into the artisanal fishing culture of Central Vietnam, where the rhythms of the tide and manual labor remain unchanged by modern technology. The best time to visit Duy Hai Fish Market is 4-5 am, and the best months of the year are from March to September, when the sea is calm.
+ The fish sauce factory: in Hoi An, traditional fish sauce production centers on a meticulous natural fermentation process that combines fresh anchovies with sea salt in large wooden vats or ceramic jars. These ingredients are layered and aged for nine to twelve months, allowing the local climate to naturally break down the proteins into a high-protein, savory liquid. The final product is a clear, amber-colored sauce extracted through a traditional filtration system, ensuring a rich umami flavor that serves as the soul of Central Vietnamese cuisine.
