History & Architecture of Nga Ba Hue Overpass

‘Nga Ba Hue’ is the name of a major intersection in Da Nang city. In Vietnamese language, ‘Nga Ba’ menas ‘three-road intersection’ and Hue is the name of the neighbouring city of Da Nang that one of the roads here goes to.

The intersection of Nga Ba Hue is the meeting place between Vietnam’s busiest highway QL1A, north-south railway and major roads in Da Nang city. For that reason, traffic congestion was often seen here, especially when road vehicles had to stop to let the train go past. On the other hand, many accidents have happened here in many consecutive years. To reduce traffic congestion and deaths, local authorities decided to build an overpass in this ‘black spot’.

An international competition was launched to find the best solutions and design for Nga Ba Hue Overpass. The winning idea is to construct an arch symbolizing the Linga and a circle symbolizing the Yoni, both in Hinduism. Before Vietnamese people came to settle down, Cham people lived in the area and they were Hindus. Shiva (‘god of destruction’) is their main deity. Linga and Yoni tell a harmonization between male and female powers, heaven and earth, yin and yang elements.

To complete Nga Ba Hue Overpass, 350 households had to move and 480,000 workers and engineers worked together both day and night for 18 months. The city spent around 2,000 billion VND.

Nga Ba Hue Overpass was inaugurated on 29th March 2015, to commemorate the 40th Da Nang Liberation Day. It became the largest overpass in the city at that time. Additionally, it’s the only 3-level overpass in Vietnam too. Meanwhile, construction of the boulevard in the northwest Da Nang urban project started (today Hoang Thi Loan Road).

About the architectural design, Nga Ba Hue Overpass has three levels:

– Ground level: The train can go across this level, without obstacles and below the high bridges above that are designed for other vehicles.

– First level: Here, eight passages from 4 roads will lead to an enormous circle structure (radius of 150 meters). Vehicles need to go around it clockwise to turn into other roads later. This circle symbolizes the Yoni, representation of goddess Shakti (or female shape of Shiva – God of destruction, God of war). Yoni and Linga are a couple of holy objects worshipped at Hindu temples around the area in past centuries. In history, Hinduism was introduced by Indians to local Cham people at least 1,000 years ago.

– Second level: There is a cable-stayed bridge with an arch rising up to 65 meters (approx 213 ft), providing the quickest passage from Dien Bien Phu St (east) to Ton Duc Thang St (west). This bridge carries a 4-lanes 17-meters-wide road. Its arch symbolizes the Linga or Lingam, a representation of Shiva God in Hinduism. This deity is known as God of war or God of destruction or Destroyer. Visitors can see Linga (in the form of sandstone sculpture) many times in Museum of Cham Sculpture in Da Nang or My Son Sanctuary (1 hour away from the city).

Nowadays, the Nga Ba Hue Overpass is one of the landmarks in Da Nang city, the capital of Vietnam’s central region.
