This day tour shows you highlights of Hue, the ancient capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945. You will see the Imperial City, Thien Mu Pagoda and Tomb of Khai Dinh Emperor that are inscribed to be Unesco world heritage sites. The Imperial City has an enormous entrance gate, grand palaces, temples, residences, gardens and high protective walls. Located on a hilltop by the Perfume River, the pagoda is built based on a legend. In the mountains, the tomb is most unique in the city. On the way from Hoi An to Hue, stop at Lap An Lagoon to see the beautiful landscape and take pictures. Hue’s local dishes are served for lunch.

Khai Dinh Tomb

Visit and take photos at the most unique royal mausoleum in Hue. It’s constructed in 11 years to be burial place for Khai Dinh, the 12nd emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty. This majestic building is an extremely stunning combination of Vietnamese and western architectures, including glorious mosaic paintings made by ceramics and glasses. See more details

The Imperial City of Hue

Visit the last surviving Imperial City in Vietnam. It’s the seat of power of Nguyen emperors from 1802 to 1945. There are about hundreds of buildings existed here before it’s damaged by wars. See more details

In the Imperial City of Hue, you will see these places:

Ngo Mon Gate: the south gate and the largest gate of the Imperial City. It’s built in 1833, with a U-shaped base and a magnificent wooden pavilion on it. Today, this building is the symbol of Hue city. In the front, there are a square and a huge flag tower. See more details

Thai Hoa Palace: the most important palace in the Imperial City where the coronation ceremony of kings take place. It also hosts great meetings between kings and mandarins, special occasions of the royal family, ceremonies to welcome foreign ambassadors. The throne is still preserved here. See more details

The Mieu Temple: the temple where Nguyen kings have been worshipped. Here, have the chance to know about them. In the front, the Nine Dynastic Urns are decorated by sophisticated bronze bas-reliefs and is honored to be world’s documentary heritage. See mode details

The Forbidden Purple City: the enclosed wall inside the Imperial City that is exclusive for kings and royal family. Its long and red corridors provide a good photo opportunity. See mode details

Kien Trung Palace: the only king’s palace that has an European style architecture. This is the residence of Vietnam’s last king and his family. Destroyed in World War II, it’s rebuilt and opened in 2024. See more details

Thien Mu Pagoda

Visit the oldest and the most famous temple in Hue. It’s built in 1601 on the hilltop by the Perfume River, based a local legend. Its octagonal tower is one of unofficial symbols of the city and a well-known photo spot. The car of Thich Quang Duc monk who burned himself to death in the Vietnam War (1963) is preserved in this pagoda. See more details

What to bring/wear

To visit historical places, visitors should wear respectively. In other words, wear long pants to cover the upper knees, wear the shirt to cover shoulders, navel and armpits.

Visitors should wear comfortable walking shoes, hat/cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, rain poncho/jacket (from October to January), cash.
