History & Architecture of Hoi An Evangelical Church

Evangelicalism was introduced into Vietnam in the late 19th century by The Christian and Missionary of Alliance – CMA. In 1911, in the French colonial period, the first Evangelical organization was established in Da Nang (known as Tourance at that time). In 1921, the religion was firstly introduced into Hoi An. First Evangelical families lived around the Japanese Covered Bridge, but there was no church constructed yet for all of the believers. Nowaday, the number of evangelicals at Hoi An is about 500.

Until today, no reliable source of information was discovered to let us know the exact day/year Hoi An Evangelical Church was built. According to locals, in 1929-1930, believers bought the piece of land where it’s located right now and then constructed a church. Since its existence, local people have called the crossroad on its left side ‘Evangelical crossroad’ (Nga Ba Tin Lanh in Vietnamese). It’s exactly the intersection of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, Hung Vuong Street and Tran Hung Dao Street.

The Hoi An Evangelical Church has a modern, modest architecture with images of local traditional styles. It’s painted red/pink, making it quite easy to recognize from a far distance. It has two entrances, the main one to the left and a side entrance to the right. There are many crosses used to decorate the church.

Next to the Hoi An Evangelical Church, there is the communal house of Tu Le hamlet of Cam Pho village. This is one of the oldest villages in Hoi An. The communal house was built in the 18th century. However, the information carved on its wooden frame tell us that it’s constructed in 1908, in the reign of Duy Tan king. In 1937 and 1995, Tu Le communal house was restored. It’s used to worship the Dai Can Goddess. According to ‘Recent Records of O Chau’ written by Duong Van An in 1553, this goddess is the princess of the Southern Tong dynasty (1127-1279). The Four Holy Mothers/Queens include herself, her sisters and her mother. One day, their family are chased (to kill) to the sea, and then have to jump into the water to escape. Fortunately, they grab a boat plank and drift to a Buddhist temple. Later, monks here rescue and take care of them. Because the princess looks beautiful, a monk becomes sexually immoral. She refuses sleeping with him, making him feel so ashamed and then kill himself by jumping into the sea. As think that he was the one saving their lives before, they choose the same way to die. Their bodies are washed ashore the Vietnamese coast, and after seeing them, local people build a temple to worship them (it’s Con Temple in Nghe An province). During the history, these goddesses appear and help kings to defeat invaders or bless fisherman safe trips on the ocean.
