Things to See & Do in Hoi An Central Park
Army Blockhouses
Along the south side of the Hoi An Central Park (Tran Hung Dao Road), there are a couple of army blockhouses. These are remains of a system to defend the base of the No.102 Battalion of combat engineers of the USA army during the Vietnam War. In the evening on 25th August 1967, Vietnamese soldiers of V25 battalion and local people attacked this place and then captured the leader alive.
In 2020, local authorities designated the army blockhouses at the Hoi An Central Market as historical sites. They are open to the public throughout the day, without any entrance fee.
Remains of Faifo Prison
In the beginning of 20th century, French people requested to build a prison in Hoi An when it served as the capital of Quang Nam province. It’s named ‘Faifo Prison’ or ‘Hoi An Prison’. Here, locals who fought against the colonists were detained and tortured. The total area was up to 2 hectares. Amongst 4 jails, one jail was used for political prisoners and one for women. The security was reinforced by 4-meters-tall brick walls with sharp glass pieces, barbed wires and many guard towers. In August 1945, after Vietnamese struggles for independence, Faifo Prison was closed. In 1947, French people returned to Hoi An and then they constructed a new prison (Thong Dang Prison) because of the increasing number of jailers. Since then, the old prison Faifo has been abandoned.
Remains of Faifo Prison are in the northwest corner of the Hoi An Central Park, by the south side of Ly Thuong Kiet Street. In the past, this prison was not far from the city hall and city police station. In recent years, it’s been restored and protected by a metal fence. In 2024, the provincial authorities recognized Faifo Prison as a historical site. Because of abandonment and conflicts, there are no documents or artifacts exhibited here to see and learn about history.
The Park
In the heart of Hoi An city, the Hoi An Central Park has an area of 45,450 m2, making it the largest public park in the area. It’s surrounded by Ly Thuong Kiet Street (north), Tran Hung Dao Street (south), Pham Hong Thai Street (east) and the Hoi An Hospital (west). People can access this park by any directions.
Before 1945, the Hoi An Central Park was exactly where the largest prison of the city was located. When French colonists withdraw from Vietnam, it’s abandoned. During the Vietnam War, there was a military base of the USA army and South Vietnam Republic here. From 1975 to 1997, a military school was built in the place and then it must be moved to Tam Ky when this city served as capital of the province. From 2005 to 2017, Phan Chu Trinh University was here and later moved to the new location when Hoi An city leaders wanted to build a park.
The Hoi An Central Park was constructed from 2018 to 2020. The total cost was more than 100 billion Vietnam dong, including 70 billion Vietnam dong from Hoi An city’s budget. It has a 2-level building in the middle to promote cultural exchanges, a square in its front, and green spaces filled by trees, pavilions and pathways. The square is paved by stone, has an area of 5,520 m2 and is able to host 5,000 people at the same time.
During the year, the Hoi An Central Park is the hosting place for many events and festivals of the city.
