History of Fire & Water Show in Dragon Bridge of Da Nang

From 2009, when the Dragon Bridge construction started, Da Nang city leaders thought about ways to make it more special. By that, there are more tourists coming to the city. Finally, the idea of dragon breathing water and fire was chosen, after meetings and debates between the city, citizens and historians.

The Dragon Bridge breathes fire and then water for the first time in its inauguration ceremony on 29th March 2013 (Friday). This event is to commemorate the 38th Da Nang Liberation Day. On the following days, Saturday and Sunday, it continued taking place.

Since 29th July 2022, the Dragon Bridge fire and water show has happened on Friday, besides Saturday and Sunday as usual. This action is one of efforts from Da Nang city people’s committee to attract more tourists.

Why Does the Dragon Bridge Breathe Fire & Water?

In Vietnamese culture, the dragon is one of 4 holy animals (others are phoenix, turtle, unicorn), and symbolizes great power, prosperity and good luck. During the feudal periods, the kings used it to represent himself.

For a very long time, for Vietnamese people who majorly are farmers, the dragon spitting water is a representation of good fortune. After the rains, it’s perfect to plant rice and start a new crop, and the fresh water is abundant to drink. Not just bringing luck, through the Dragon Bridge show, Da Nang city also expresses its ambition about a peaceful and prosperous land.

The other reason, for sure, is to attract more visitors to the city. They have one more thing to do (and it’s unusual and fun). Nowadays, nobody misses this show if spending the night in Da Nang.

Days & Timings of Dragon Bridge Fire & Water Show

The fire and water show at the Dragon Bridge takes place from 9 to 9:30 PM on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In which, the dragon breathes bursts of flames several times from its mouth and then water. Traffic is closed before it begins, to guarantee audience’s safety.

On official competition nights of the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (usually in the summertime, June and July), Dragon Bridge fire and water show will be shut down. So, visitors need to check the reschedule of this event if want to see this unusual performance. When it rains too heavily or a typhoon comes, usually between October and January, it’s not available as well. One good way is asking people in the hotel to know the chance of seeing low or high.

Where to Watch Dragon Bridge Fire & Water Show?

Here are the best places to watch the fire and water show at the Dragon Bridge in Da Nang:

On the Dragon Bridge: This is the closest spot to witness and photograph, so many people here. Remember to come early (maybe 30 mins before show time). Depending on wind direction, visitors will get wet on one side. It’s needed to bring an umbrella or rain poncho/rain jacket if you like to catch the clearest pictures and videos.

Tran Hung Dao Street Promenade: this is on the same bank of the river with dragon’s head, so visitors can see and capture the whole bridge itself and the show. Somewhere, the trees obscure the view. Local vendors who sell cold beverages, will give buyers a chair to sit (it’s helpful to know if travel with elders). Like on the bridge, it’s also crowded here during tourist seasons. Once again, coming early is a top tip. Bach Dang street promenade (Hai Chau district side) gives us a full view of the bridge at night, but not so well for the show.

Han River Cruises: watching the fire and water show at the Dragon Bridge from a river cruise is a way to avoid big crowds around the bridge’s head. Visitors need to book the one leaving at 8 PM, and it will return after the performance. Additionally, looking at the riverscape and bridges, and taking photos are also good memories. Love Lock Bridge: a pedestrian bridge on the east bank of the Han River, near the Dragon Carp statue and the Dragon Bridge. See more information & details

Rooftop Bars & Cafes along Han Riverfronts: tall buildings along the water edges of the Han river, near the Dragon Bridge, are ideal to witness (but not perfect for photography).

Bach Dang Walking Street: a 1,2-kilometers-long pedestrian street with beverage and souvenir shops, on the west bank of the Han River. From here, the view to Tran Thi Ly Bridge is also awesome. See more information & details
