Origin & Meaning of Hung Kings Festival
Hung Kings Festival is one of public holidays in Vietnam, where Vietnamese people honor the 18 legendary kings who founded the first state of Vietnam, Van Lang. It serves as a powerful symbol of national unity and ancestral gratitude, reinforcing the cultural belief that all Vietnamese people share a single “common origin”.
Who are Hung Kings? The Hung Kings were a dynasty of 18 legendary monarchs who ruled over Van Lang, the first sovereign state of the Vietnamese people, from roughly 2879 to 258 BCE. They are revered as the founding fathers of the nation, credited with teaching the early people how to cultivate rice and establishing the core cultural identity of Vietnam.
In 2012, the worship of Hung Kings was officially inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as a testament to the enduring ancestral veneration that unites the Vietnamese people.

Things to Do in Da Nang during Hung Kings Festival
The biggest celebration in Hung Kings Festival in Vietnam takes place in and around Hung Temple (Phu Tho province, northern Vietnam). The Hung Temple Festival features solemn incense-offering rituals and grand palanquin processions that wind up Nghia Linh Mountain to honor the founding ancestors. Beyond the spiritual ceremonies, the event is a vibrant cultural fair where millions of pilgrims enjoy traditional Xoan singing, bronze drum performances, and competitive folk games like rice cooking and wrestling.
In Da Nang, there is no Hung Kings temple, so local people often go to communal houses and temples in their community to commemorate the kings. At some public places like the Da Nang Museum or squares/parks, visitors can find some exhibitions about this festival.
Although Hung Kings Festival is a national public day in Vietnam, all attractions in Da Nang still open. Visitors still can go to Ba Na Hills, Golden Hands Bridge, Marble Mountains, Am Phu Cave, Lady Buddha, Son Tra Mountain, Hai Van Pass, Cham Islands, Hoi An Ancient Town, My Son Sanctuary, Than Tai Hot Springs Park, Mikazuki Water Park, My Khe Beach, Son Tra Night Market, Museum of Cham Sculpture, Dragon Bridge, Han Market, Da Nang Cathedral,…
It’s possible to see big crowds during Hung Kings Festival, especially when it falls in weekend and local citizens have additional resting days. It’s less crowded in the day just before and after the official festival day(s).
The most popular things to do in Da Nang at night, fire and water show at Dragon Bridge, still takes place. It’s available all nights during Hung Kings Festival.
Night river cruises on Han River could be fully booked during the festival. Night markets such as Son Tra Night Market will be crowded due to local tourists.
